Good afternoon, class.
Good afternoon, Ma’am Jean.
Let’s begin our day with a prayer.
Let us put ourselves in the most holy presence of the
Lord. Dear God…

Before we proceed with our lesson for today, kindly

pick up the pieces of paper and arrange your chairs.

Now let us check today’s attendance. Say present if

you are here.

Splendid, everyone is present today, which means we

would have another wonderful time of learning to

B. Presentation
In today’s discussion let’s have this quick activity
first.

Find the noun that should be replaced with its

pronoun.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte delivered Duterte’s

Address to the Nation in a recorded speech on
December 7, 2020.

I’ll give you 30 seconds to answer. The person who

can find the noun will receive a plus point.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte delivered Duterte’s

Address to the Nation in a recorded speech on
December 7, 2020.
Very good, it’s Duterte’s. Now what pronoun should
we use? Take a look at what point of view it is
whether it is first-, second-, or third-person point of
view.
The pronoun we are going to replace is his.
Excellent!

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte delivered his Address

to the Nation in a recorded speech on December 7,
2020.

Now, arrange the scrambled letters and match the

word of which definition it belongs.

Nporoun:_______ a. a word for which a pronoun

stands

Ceandentte:______ b.a word used to stand for (or

take the place of) a noun.

Marvelous. Good job everyone. of) a noun.

Base on this activity what do you think is our topic

for today.
The topic is about pronoun antecedent.

Very good. To be exact, our topic for today is

pronoun antecedent agreement.

C. Comparison/Discussion:
Let’s define again what’s a pronoun and an
antecedent.

A pronoun is a word used to stand for (or take the

place of) a noun. While an antecedent is a word for
Precisely. Very good. which a pronoun stands.

Now, about about pronoun antecedent agreement?

Let’s find out shall we. Everyone read.
Pronoun antecedent agreement is when the pronoun
agrees in number (referring to singular or plural) and
person (referring to first, second, or third person) with
its antecedent.
When you check your sentences to determine if the
pronouns agree with their antecedents in both number
and person, look first for the antecedent. Then match
the antecedent with a pronoun that is consistent in
number.

For example, if the pronoun is singular, the

antecedent should also be singular. Then identify the
antecedent person (first, second, or third person), and
then match the pronouns in person.

To further understand this, let’s learn the nine rules

of pronoun antecedent agreement.

First rule everyone read.

1. A phrase or clause between the subject and the

verb does not change the number of the antecedent.
Let’s have this example.
singular
Subject plural obj. Pronoun
The can of beans sits on its shelf.
Prepositional phrase

So, our subject here is ‘can’ which shows it is a

singular subject despite having the following
sentence can of beans. However, note that ‘of beans’
is a prepositional phrase.

What’s a prepositional phrase?

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that starts

with a preposition (like "on," "in," or "at") and ends
with a noun or pronoun. It gives more information
about location, time, direction, or other details in a
sentence.
So, despite having a plural objective it does not

change our antecedent. Since our subject is singular

thus make our antecedent as well.

Let’s try another example and you will identify the

pronoun and the antecedent. Everyone read.
The science book that I borrowed from the library is
interesting.
Find our antecedent.
Science book
How about our pronoun
is
Very good.

Let’s proceed to our 2nd rule, everyone read.

2. Indefinite pronouns as antecedents
We have different indefinite pronouns. Let’s have the
first one which is the singular indefinite pronoun.

• Singular indefinite pronoun antecedents take

singular pronoun referents.

SINGULAR: each, either, neither, one, no one,

nobody, nothing, anyone, anybody
Example:

Each of the students conducts his or her experiments

at school.

Identify the antecedent, prepositional phrase, and

pronoun.
Each is our antecedent and of the students is our
Precisely. prepositional phrase, while his or her, is our pronoun.
singular
antecedent pronoun
Each of the students conducts his or her experiments
at school.

"Each" is considered a singular pronoun because it

refers to one individual within a group or collection.

Then let’s have our plural antecedent.

• Plural indefinite pronoun antecedents require plural
referents.

PLURAL: several, few, both, many

Example:

Address: Galas, Dipolog City Zamboanga del Norte

SCHOOLS DIVISION OF DIPOLOG CITY
GALAS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
NATIONAL HIGHWAY, GALAS, DIPOLOG CITY

Both students exert considerable effort in their

Science-10 modules.

So, since both is an indefinite pronoun antecedent

this it requires a plural referent.

Why do you think both is a plural?

When "both" is used, it suggests that there are two
distinct entities being considered together.
Exactly.

Aside from singular and plural pronoun antecedent,

we have some indefinite pronouns that are modified
by a prepositional phrase may be either singular or
plural.

Everyone read.
EITHER SINGULAR OR PLURAL: some, any, none,
all, most

In this part we are going to base our prepositional

phrase whether it is singular or plural.

Example:

Some of the salt for the experiment spilled out of its

sack.

Which here is our prepositional phrase?

Of the salt
Can we count the grain of salt?
No, Ma’am.
Exactly, with that it makes our prepositional phrase
uncountable makes us use a singular referent
pronoun.

Then we have the countable.

Example:

All of the experiments were salvaged by their

researchers during the laboratory mishap.

Where is our prepositional phrase?

Of the experiments
With this preposition, we can count how many the

experiment right?
Yes, Ma’am.
Researchers are countable; therefore, the sentence has
a plural referent pronoun.

Am I understood?
Yes, Ma’am.
Let’s proceed to our third rule. Everyone read.
3. Compound subjects joined by ‘and’ always take a
plural referent.
Example:

Rose bush and the oak tree lose their leaves in the
fall.

Identify our antecedent, compound subject, and our

pronoun in the sentence.
‘Rose bush and oak tree’ are our antecedent, ‘and’ is
our compound subject, and ‘their’ is our pronoun.
Very good.

Rose bush and the oak tree lose their leaves in the
fall.

While with compound subjects joined by or/nor, the

referent pronoun agrees with the antecedent closer to
the pronoun, is our fourth rule.

Example #1 (plural antecedent closer to pronoun):

Singular plural plural
Either the lion or the zebras lose their way in the
dense forest.

Notice that the antecedent closest to our pronoun is

the same. This is the principle where the pronoun
refers to the antecedent nearest to it.

Example #2 (singular antecedent closer to pronoun):

plural singular singular

Either the lions or the zebra lose its way in the dense
forest.

While is the nearest to the pronoun is singular this

will also make our pronoun singular.

Am I understood?
Yes, Ma’am.
Let’s proceed to our fifth rule. Everyone read.
5. Collective Nouns (group, jury, crowd, team, etc.)

GALAS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
NATIONAL HIGHWAY, GALAS, DIPOLOG CITY

Example: may be singular or plural, depending on meaning.

A flock of geese navigates its way westward during

migration.

Where is our collective noun?

Flock
The flock is acting as one unit; therefore, the referent
pronoun is singular.

Explains why our pronoun is ‘its’.

Let’s have another example.

The team of researchers debates whether their

findings support a singular theory or multiple
hypotheses.

Where is our collective noun?

Team
Does the ‘team of researchers’ shows a plural or
singular referent?
It shows it is plural.
Why does it show to be plural?
In this example, the team of members are acting as
more than one individuals; therefore, the
referent pronoun is plural.

Exactly, well done.

D. Generalization
There you have it, our first to fifth rule in the nine
rules of pronoun-antecedent agreement. Let’s stop at
the fifth since Group Five will report the rest.
Therefore, it’s time for a recap.

Let’s have a quick game for us to recap the five rules.

Let’s play first, ‘What am I?’ All you have to do is to
is either identify or define what is ask in the screen.
The person who can give the answer will receive a
point.

Ready?
Yes, Ma’am

When the pronoun agrees in number

(referring to singular or plural) and person (referring
to first, second, or third person) with its
Antecedent, what am I?

rule am I?
Rule number 1
Both make a great effort in their English-10 modules.
What rule am I? Specify which part of the rule.
Rule number 2, plural indefinite pronoun antecedents.
Define what rule number 3 is.
Compound subjects joined by and always take a plural
referent
The referent pronoun agrees with the antecedent
closer to the pronoun. What am I?
Compound subjects joined by or/nor

Define rule number 5.

Collective Nouns (group, jury, crowd, team, etc.) may
be singular or plural, depending on meaning.

Alright, good job everyone.

E. Application

1. In your own words, define the antecedent of

pronouns. Give one example of a sentence
using pronouns effectively.

_________________________________________

Example:

2. Describing “Mother Earth”, compose a paragraph

of 5 sentences following the pronoun-antecedent
rules.

“Mother Earth”
