These two terms that refer to the different usage

of a language in speech. Most people use these
two terms as synonyms. However, they have
differences in a variety of aspects related to their
usage.

What is slang?
Slang is more common in speech than writing and
is typically restricted to a particular context or
group of people. Therefore, slang is used between
people who belong to the same social group and
those who know each other well.

Examples of slang words:

Kindly read Mr. _______. (The students will read the examples)

Nuts - mad, crazy

Rocking – awesome, great
Kicks – shoes
Chill – relax
Nasty – gross

Slang changes quickly, and as a result, slang words

and expressions can disappear from the language.
Similarly, new slang expressions can get updated in
a language from time to time according to the
standards of the people who use it.

The next one we have is Colloquial Language

I want somebody from the class to please read the Colloquial language is the informal language used
text shown in the slide. Okay Ms. Cagatin kindly by people in everyday speech. This form language
read. usage is also known as colloquialism or casualism.
Compared to slang, colloquial language is most
appropriate in the conversational form or the
Okay thank you Ms. Cagatin. speech form.
Colloquial language is the everyday use of
language, commonplace parlance, or vernacular
language. A phrase that is common in every day.

Here are some examples of Colloquial Language:

Wanna – want to
Go bananas – get angry

Gonna – going to
Go nuts – become insane
Y’all – you all
Buzz off – go away

Similarity Between Slang and Colloquial Language.

Kindly read Ms. Vios Both slang and colloquial language are spoken
forms of a language, and both use informal
vocabulary.
Thank you for that Ms. Vios, I think it is very
understandable that they use both informal
vocabulary that can be used only with the
parameter of a certain people. Note that, certain
groups such as teenagers typically use slang while
ordinary people in their daily speech use colloquial
language.

Conclusion
Slang and Colloquial language are two forms of
spoken form of a language. Both use informal
words and expressions. However, slang is more
informal compared to colloquial language. Slang is
predominantly used by certain groups of people
like teenagers while colloquial language is used the
ordinary people in their daily speech.

APPLICATION
“Now that we are done with our discussion, we are
going to have an activity and we are going to apply
what we have learned about slang and colloquial
language.”

song was sung by the very famous singer Bruno
Mars, this song is entitled The Lazy Song. In this
activity, I want you to work in pairs, so you are
going to work with the person next to you. I am
going to play the music and I want you to take note
of the different slang or colloquial words
mentioned. I will then be asking some students
about what they have noted and then try to use it “Yes sir”
in a sentence. Am I clear?
