The Challenge
Exponents
Gr. 6 Math Challenge

Big Idea: Learning how to use exponents by designing games.

Design Challenge: When you create a video game, you need to manage the player’s
points, levels, lives, energy, time usage, which baddies or bosses they are fighting, what rewards they
are receiving etc, as the player moves from one level to the next.

“How can you create a video game storyboard that correctly demonstrates how to solve exponents?”
Instructions
3
You are learning how to use exponents. 3 = 3x3x3 = 27.

Create a storyboard for a video game that uses exponents to manage how the player advances through
the game.

Example: Level 1: You want the player to get exponentially bigger each time they touch the growth gem.
They can touch this gem a maximum of three times to grow their character. You will use the expressions
2 3 4
2 2 2 for each time the player clicks on the growth gem to grow the players size exponentially. Use
the Picture box in the game storyboard to draw all the parts of this level. Use the math involved box in the
game storyboard to correctly demonstrate how you are using exponents for this level. Use the Math
Mastery box in the game storyboard to do 4 sample exponent questions to demonstrate you have
mastered this skill.
