Carpentry
(Grade-8)

I. Objectives:
a. Discuss and identify the different types and uses of measuring tools.
b. Value the importance of knowing the different types and uses of measuring tools.
c. Demonstrate how to handle the measuring instrument or tool.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Types of Measuring Tools
Reference: Learning Module_ K-12 Basic Education Curriculum TLE: Carpentry
(pages 44-46)
Materials: PowerPoint presentation on the types of measuring tools

III. Procedure:
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
a. Routine
Good morning class! Good morning ma’am.
Let us start our day by asking guidance to
our Lord. Are you ready to pray classmates?
(Name of student) will you lead the prayer? Yes, we are.
Let us pray.
(Prays the Lord’s Prayer)

Class Secretary are there any absent for

today? None, ma’am.
Thank you.

b. Drill
Class, do you still remember our lesson Yes, ma’am.
yesterday?
Then can anyone from the class tell me what Our lesson yesterday is about different
was the lesson tackled yesterday? classification of carpentry tools

And what are those classifications of  Measuring tools

carpentry tools?  Marking tools
(Let the student give examples on each of the  Testing tools
classification of tools)  Edge-cutting tools
 Tooth-cutting tools
 Boring tools
 Holding tools
 Driving tools
 PPE

Alright, since you still remember our lesson

yesterday, let us now proceed to our next
lesson.

c. Lesson Proper

Motivation
But before we officially start our new lesson.
Let us have a game first. The game is called
“4-pics-1-word”. I know you have heard of this
game so trust that you also know how to play
this game. Right? Yes, ma’am.

1.  Push-pull rule

2.  Compass
3.  Divider

Lecture Discussion
The pictures that I showed you earlier are
somehow related to our lesson today.
Can you guess what our lesson is for today?

A measuring instrument or tool is a device

for measuring a physical quantity. Different
measuring tools are used in carpentry. Here are
some common examples:

Push-pull rule, will you read (calls a Push-pull rule- used for measuring long
student). pieces of stock.

It is a measuring tape that coils into compact

case.
(shows a picture)

Zigzag rule, will you read (calls a student). Zigzag rule- a folded measuring tool.

A rule composed of light strips of wood joined

by rivets so as to be foldable, all the opening
and closing parts being parallel.
(shows picture)

Ruler, will you read (calls a student). Ruler- used for measuring short pieces of
stock.
It is sometimes called rule or line gauge, is
device used in geometry and technical drafting,
as well as construction and engineering
industries, to measure or draw straight line.
(shows a picture)
Caliper, will you read (calls a student). Caliper- used for measuring diameter.

It’s a device used to measure the distance

between two opposite sides of an object.
(shows a picture)

Try square, will you read (calls a student). Try square- used for checking flatness and
squareness.
A woodworking tool used for marking and
measuring a square piece of wood. The square
refers to the tools primary use of measuring the
accuracy of a right angle/90˚ and to try a
surface is to check its straightness or
correspondence to an adjoining surface.
(shows a picture)

Divider, will you read (calls a student). Divider- used for dividing distances.

An instrument for measuring, transferring or

marking off distances, consisting of two
straight adjustable legs hinged together and
ending in sharp points.
(shows a picture)

Compass, will you read (calls a student). Compass- used for scribing arcs and circles.

A pair of compasses is a technical drawing

instrument that can be used for inscribing
circles or arcs.
(shows a picture)

Protractor, will you read (calls a student). Protractor- used for laying out angles.

A measuring instrument typically made of

transparent plastic or glass used for measuring
angles. Most protractors measure angles in
degrees, divided into 180 equal parts.
(shows a picture)

Now let us move on how to properly handle

a measuring instruments or tools:
Here are what you should do to handle them
properly;
Number one, will you read (calls a student) 1. Wipe measuring tools before returning
 Always used a damp cloth first when them to the storage room.
wiping the tools then wipe it again
with a dry cloth before storing them.
Number two, will you read (calls a student) 2. Oil the movable parts of the measuring
 Some measuring instruments have tools such as zigzag rules, calipers,
movable parts and a good carpenter dividers and compasses to avoid stock

putting oil in their knots.
Number three, will you read (calls a student) 3. Make sure that the grits like sand do

small spaces of the tools. graduations.
Number four, will you read (calls a student) 4. Check the lack of the push-pull rule.
 Sometimes the lack of the push-pull
rule gets stock so one should check it
up if the spring inside is still working.

While here are what you shouldn’t do when

handling measuring tools;
Number one, will you read (calls a student) 1. Do not wipe of edges of the steel tape
 These edges are very sharp and can of push-pull rule with bare hands to

want to clean it make sure to use cloth
that is thick to cover your hands.
Number two, will you read (calls a student) 2. Do not pull the steel tape of pull-push
 Only use the pull-push rule when rule to much to avoid the coil spring

overusing it so that the coil spring do
get tangle.
Number three, will you read (calls a student) 3. Do not use the calipers as tongs
 Do not play with the calipers. It is used
for measurement other than that, one
should not play with it or use it for
other purposes.

Activity
Now that I have explained the different types
of measuring tools. I have an activity for you.
This activity is called “Picture Guess”. You
only have to guess what the picture is called
and raise the flags I give you. The first group
to raise the flag will answer and if the answer
is wrong the other group can steal the chance
to answer.
Alright class, group yourselves into 2 groups.
Group 1 will be on my right with the red flag
and Group 2 on the left side with the blue flag
Generalization
1. What is the significance of the knowing the
types of measuring tools as carpentry
student?

2. Give three examples of measuring tools.

3. Enumerate the dos/ don’ts in handling a

measuring instrument or tool.

IV. Evaluation

Directions: Write what is being asked below.

rule to avoid wearing off the graduations.
9. Do not wipe of edges of the steel tape of push-pull rule with bare hands to avoid
injury.
