most cases) know what the goal is, in advance of
the lesson.

right/wrong answers. Good move. Students can get really tripped up by
the idea of being “right”

Day. The group shows a video on the topic. I just want to say, excellent use of technological
sources (and great slides – You’re giving me major
slide goals)

Also, this is a great video – I wonder if there might


be more facilitation (eg, some pausing to discuss
Columbus, students’ prior knowledge of
Columbus / Columbus Day, etc.). Each part of the
video offers a great opportunity for some
facilitation, such as: “What can we learn from the
history of Columbus Day?”

Arieana and Kat facilitate a discussion of
names/labels. This is so, so, so important. Thank you!

Kat moves into a discussion of The Three Fires,


asks students intermittent questions (eg has This is so interesting! Should students be taking
anyone ridden in a canoe?) notes? Filling out a worksheet? Etc. As adults,
we’re pretty good at lecture, but I wonder how
lecture would go with younger students. But in
general, this is a very organized and well done.

worksheet and crayons. Uses doc cam to I love how this activity relies on a sense of
facilitate. geography and how a compass works. It really
does integrate a touch of science. Also, excellent,

means?”

Imani asks, “Why is this important?” This is exactly the kind of question we’re going to
encounter from time to time! You handled it well.
It’s important to know that Michigan
encompasses a large population of Tribal Peoples.

Asiya facilitates discussion of Tribal traditions and Great, important information. I was beginning to
beliefs. wonder whether third graders would be able to
sit through the info, but your incorporation of a
visual (worksheet) works well. (And I could see
this being exciting to students.)

I love that you had to get the group back on track!

Instead of telling students, I’d be curious to see
what they came up with.
The final activity is a Kahoot review.
Excellent touch. Great use of a formative
assessment – I really enjoyed it.
Final thoughts:
This was an absolutely beautiful, well-thought-out
lesson incorporating the importance of correct
labels, Tribal Peoples, geography, and even a bit
of science. This was perfectly varied, with art, and
writing prompts. I could easily see this lesson
playing out in a third-grade classroom and I hope
you’ll consider it for future use.
