literacy and (Students will answer)
numeracy skills.

Very good! Plants need food to respire, grow and reproduce.

Unlike animals and human, plants are able to make their
own by the process of photosynthesis. (students will listen to the discussion)

The plant kingdom, plays a crucial rule in the lifecycle of

all living things for the following reason;

1. It is a source of food for almost all organism in the planet.

2. It provides resources for humans with aesthetic

and economic value.
(students will listen to the discussion)
3. It provides habitats for different organisms.

4. Because of its role in the Biogeochemical Cycles.

5. It maintains the Earth’s atmosphere through Photosynthesis.

Plants are very important

Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction that takes place inside

a plant, producing food the plant to survive.
Did you know that light, water, and carbon dioxide are all
(students will listen to the discussion)
needed for photosynthesis to take place?

the underside of the leaf, the stomata is tiny openings of pores
in plant tissue that allow for gas exchange. (students will listen to the discussion)

Water- is one of the important elements of plants to survive

and water is absorbed by the root hair cells and it is
transported to the leaf by the xylem vessels.

What do you mean by xylem vessels?

(Students will answer)

Xylem vessels, class is the specialized tissue of vascular plants

that transports water and nutrients from the plant soil interface (students will listen to the discussion)
to stems and leaves.

Sunlight, provides the energy needed for plants. Sunlight

(students will listen to the discussion)
provides the energy for photosynthesis, serving as the primary
source of energy for plants to grow and thrive in everyday life.

Do you have any idea, what is oxygen?

(Students will answer)
Very good! Oxygen is released through the stomata on the
underside of the leaf; glucose is transported around the plant in
the phloem vessels. The phloem is living tissue responsible for (students will listen to the discussion)
transporting food and other organic materials.

Sun it gives the variety of types of energy such as radio wave,

microwaves, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma
rays.

Visible light is the wavelengths of visible light drive and power

photosynthesis.

Visible light, also known as white light, is actually a mixture of

colors from the rainbow. What are the colors of the rainbow?
(Students will answer)

Excellent! The color of the rainbow is Red, orange, yellow,

green, blue, indigo, and violet.

We should remember that photosynthesis is a process that

convert solar energy into glucose. (students will listen to the discussion)

This formula outline of photosynthesis:

Carbon dioxide plus water in the presence of sunlight will held
glucose and oxygen.

+ + +
Carbon Water Glucose Oxygen

Chlorophyll

Let’s talk about them one by one. Let’s have first the two
(students will listen to the discussion)
majors of photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis has two major steps;

Photo part
Synthesis part
The photo part - is going to encompasses the light dependent
reaction.

The synthesis - is going to be the light independent reaction or

the Calvin cycle.

Chloroplasts- is an organelle that carries out photosynthesis. (students will listen to the discussion)

Inside the chloroplast is thylakoid.

Thylakoid – it contains the green pigment of the plant

responsible for light absorption called the chlorophyll.

Granum – One stack of thylakoid is called the granum.

Grana - Multiple stacks of granum is called the grana. (students will listen to the discussion)

Lumen – Lumen is the fluid inside the thylakoid.

Stroma- Stroma is the fluid inside the chloroplasts.

Did you know that chloroplasts have two membranes?

(students will listen to the discussion)
The inner membrane
The outer membrane
The intermembrane space

Now let us have the two stages of photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis has two stages:

The light dependent reaction – happen at the thylakoids within
the chloroplasts.
The light independent reaction- occurs inside the stroma of the
chloroplasts.

Why is it called the light independent reactions?

Applied knowledge (Students will answer)
of content within
and across
curriculum teaching Very good! It is because it can proceed even without light and
areas. energy.

Why is it called the light dependent reactions?

(Students will answer)
light-dependent reactions are used because these biochemical
processes rely on light energy to drive the initial stages of
photosynthesis.

Oxidizes water into oxygen gas. (students will listen to the discussion)
Oxidation- involves the loss of
electrons.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) –

where NADP+ brings the electrons? It will be brought into
NADPH or the reduce form of NADP+.

Energy from light is used to make adenosine triphosphate or

ATP from ADP+P.
ATP is produced by chemiosmosis using an enzyme called ATP (students will listen to the discussion)
synthase.

The products of light dependent reactions are;

• Oxygen
• ATP
• NADPH

The reactants of light dependent reactions;

• Water
• NADP+
• ADP+P

Light independent reaction or the Calvin cycle also known as

the dark reaction.
In this type of reaction, it takes in carbon dioxide and reduces
it into glucose. Carbon dioxide turned into glucose is a (students will listen to the discussion)
reductive process. There must be an oxidation reduction
process. How? This time NADPH gives up its electrons and
NADP+ will gain it. Carbon dioxide will have received its
electrons and eventually turned it into glucose.

What powers the Calvin cycle?

(Students will answer)

ATP its responsible for powering the Calvin cycle process. In

this process the ATP converted back into ADP+P. The Calvin
cycle the reactants are the carbon dioxide, ATP, and NADPH (students will listen to the discussion)
while products are the glucose, NADP+, ADP+P.

To clearly understand the processes lets simplify things by

comparing the light dependent and light independent reactions.
(students will listen to the discussion)

Next we have the differences of light dependent and light

independent reactions.

• Differences between Light Dependent reactions and

light independent reactions;

The two reactions in different places the light dependent

reaction s happen in the thylakoid while the light independent
reactions happen in the stroma another point of contrast, light (students will listen to the discussion)
dependent reactions require energy from the sun while light
independent reaction can happen without the sun’s energy.
They also differ in reactants and products. The reactant of light
dependent reactions is water, NADP+, ADP+P while the
products of light independent reactions are glucose, NAD+,
ADP+P.
Similarities between light dependent reactions to light
independent reactions; (students will listen to the discussion)

• Require ATP
• Generate ATP
• Utilize the electron transport chain thru oxidation
reduction
• Utilize the ATP synthase

In general class, Photosynthesis is vital because it is the

process through which plants convert sunlight into energy,
providing oxygen and sustenance for life on Earth. It plays a
crucial role in maintaining the balance of oxygen and carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere, supporting the survival of both
plants and animals.

Are there any question regards to our discussion? None so far.

Again, what are the three essential components needed for

photosynthesis to take place?
water, carbon dioxide, and light energy.

The light dependent reaction – happen at the

photosynthesis? The light independent reaction- occurs inside
the stroma of the chloroplasts.

Great! Why is it important for us to study photosynthesis and

its processes? (Students will answer)

Excellent! Answer class, always remember class that plants

need food to respire, grow and reproduce. Unlike animals and
human, plants are able to make their own by the process of
photosynthesis.
