Pneumatic Test Procedure

1. Scope

This procedure is applicable for leak testing of pneumatically pressurizing Equipment’s .

2. Reference documents

Approved drawing.
Approved ITP

3. Responsibilities

Responsibilities related to leak testing in accordance to this procedure:

a. Production Engineer (PE)


i. Preparation and Performance of leak test

ii. Ensuring Safety requirements are met

b. Quality Control Engineer (QCE)


i. Monitoring of leak test

ii. Inspection during and after attainment of test pressure

iii. Recording of results and preparation of leak test report

In absence of PE, the Production Manager (PM) and in absence of QCE, the Quality
Control Manager will carry out the above respective functions.

4. Test Preparation

a. Pneumatic testing shall be taken up after completion of weld joint.

The QCM shall review the ITP and accompanying documents for verification of
completeness of welding, and NDT prior to taking the Job for pneumatic testing.

b. Prior to pneumatic test PE shall ensure the following:

i. PT testing of welding joints.


ii. Soap solution shall be prepared for testing using Detergent and water

iii. External surface of equipment, including weld faces, shall be cleaned of any oil,
grease, or other contaminants.

5. Test Medium

Compressed air shall be used as test medium.

6. Test Temperature

Ambient.

7. Test Pressure

Test pressure shall be maintained at as per approved drawing.

8. Procedure

i. Duct shall be pressurized to pressure gradually. Test pressure shall be maintained


for 30 minutes before applying the soap solution.

ii. Apply soap solution on all butt weld joints.

iii. Check the leakage at the weld joint. If there is leakage at the weld joint, then

bubbles will be formed.

9. Inspection

Pressure shall be maintained for a time period sufficient to permit inspection of al


the duct weld joints. Visual inspection shall be carried out for all butt weld joints.
Leaking weld joints shall be clearly marked.

In case of leaks being found, the equipment shall be depressurized.


The re-welding of leaking weld joint, weld joint shall be carried out.The

test shall be repeated to check the leakage of those weld joints.

10. Post Pneumatic Test Activity

After completion of pneumatic testing, the test pressure shall be gradually


released and vents opened.

11. Inspection report

After satisfactory completion of pneumatic/leak test, the results shall be recorded


in the Pneumatic Pressure Test Report.
