Method Statement for Interlocking Block and Curb Stone

Installation
Introduction
This method statement outlines the procedures for the installation of interlocking blocks
and curb stones.
These materials are essential components in constructing durable pavements and curbs.
The statement covers the delivery, storage, handling, installation, cleaning, and protection
aspects of the project.

Materials for Application

1. Precast Curb Stone.
2. Interlocking Block.
3. Aggregate Sub-base & Base Course.
4. Geotextile - Separation Layer (Geotextile Fabric 140).
5. Mortar.
6. Soil Sterilizer.

Delivery, Storage, and Handling of Curb Stone and Interlocking

Block
A. Material Delivery
1. All materials must be delivered to the site in the manufacturer's original,
unopened containers and packages with unbroken seals and intact labels.
2. Damaged materials, such as partially caked cement, containers with water stains,
or damaged packaging, are not suitable for use and should be removed from the
site.

B. Handling of Curb Stone

1. Precautionary measures should be taken to prevent any damage to curb stones
during unloading and storage. Damaged curbs must not be used and should be
replaced immediately with new materials.

C. Coordination
1. Coordination with other work sections that adjoin these materials should be
ensured before installation to guarantee smooth integration.

Installation
1. Curb Stone
A. Layout
1. Set the layout for curb stones according to the approved plan, ensuring that
lines and grades are followed.
B. Base Course Preparation
1. Compact the base course to achieve sufficient compaction before its final
placement.
C. Setting Curb Stones
1. Set curbs in a full bed of mortar to ensure stability and resistance to lateral
forces exerted by adjacent elevated interlocking blocks.
2. Maintain a minimum 10mm spacing between curb stones, and fill the joints
with mortar to ensure a strong bond between adjoining curbs.

2. Interlocking Blocks
A. Subgrade Preparation
1. Prepare the subgrade for interlocking block installation by removing soft soils
that could create an unstable foundation.

B. Base Course Placement

1. Place the aggregate sub-base and base as indicated in the plan.
2. Compact the base by tamping it with a rubber mallet and screed it to the
required depth.
C. Geotextile Placement
1. Lay geotextile fabric over the compacted base course, ensuring overlapping ends
and edges by at least 300mm.
D. Leveling Course
1. Place the leveling course and screed it to a thickness of 25-38mm. Ensure
constant moisture content and loose and constant unit pavers for proper setting
and compaction.
E. Soil Sterilization
1. Treat the leveling base with a soil sterilizer to inhibit the growth of grass and
weeds.
F. Block Setting
1. Set pavers with a minimum joint width of 1.6mm and a maximum of 3mm, taking
care not to disturb the leveling base.
2. Use string lines to maintain straight lines and place pavers hand-tight against
spacer bars (if present).
3. Fill gaps between units, not exceeding 10mm, with pieces cut from full-size unit
pavers.
G. Joint Filling
1. Spread dry sand and fill the joints between the pavers.
2. Vibrate pavers and continue adding sand until the joints are filled. Remove
excess sand.
H. Traffic Restriction
1. Do not allow traffic on installed pavers until the sand has been vibrated into the
joints.

Cleaning and Protection

A. Replacement
1. Remove and replace unit pavers that are loose, chipped, broken, stained, or
otherwise damaged, or that do not match adjoining units as intended.

B. Protection
1. Protect the finished work from damage until substantial completion.

C. Debris Removal
1. At the end of each workday, remove rubbish and debris resulting from this work
from the site.
This method statement ensures that the installation of interlocking blocks and curb stones is
executed in a systematic and precise manner, resulting in a durable and well-finished
pavement and curb system.
