1 INTRODUCTION

M/s NKG Infrastructures Ltd. (NKG) has been engaged for construction work of land
slide from Ch. 436+720 to 436+870 and Ch. 429+390 to 429+490 of Package-III
Chamoli to Paini. This above-mentioned area was a active landslide and it’s
treatment was part of schedule B of contract. The landslide was very much
venerable and during monsoon due to saturation it becomes more prone to slide.
The active land slide zone is mainly on hill side so due to landslide road may get
blocked. Further M/s NKG Infrastructure Ltd. engaged Mr. Shivendra Kumar
as Design Director and M/s KQC Global Consultants (KQC) as Proof Consultant.
M/s KQC further engaged Dr. Shyo Prasad, Engineering Geologist of M/s Aligarh Geo
Services LLP for assessment of geological & geotechnical and protection work of land
slide. A proper proof checked design has been submitted to Authority Engineer and
majority of treatment has been carried out by NKG Infrastructures Ltd.

The Main objective of site visit is to review the executed work on ground and find
deficiency /demerits in executed work and propose rectification so that its safety can
be ensured during the monsoon.

2 SITE VISIT

A joint visit of officers of NHIDCL, Team of AE Design Director and site in-charge of
NKG was made on 8th to 9th March 2022 for assess the quality and protection work of

3 PROJECT LOCATION

The project lies in the north-eastern part of Uttarakhand and is a part of Char Dham
Pariyojna. It’s the only connecting road to Badrinath Dham. The Project road passes
through Rudraprayag & Chamoli district of two districts of Uttarakhand.

4 OBSERVATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

For assess the quality and protection work of land slide as per topography, geology
and geotechnical work, following observation made during site visit:

Two locations, one from Ch. 436+720 to 436+870 and other from Ch. 429+390 to
429+490 has been visited on 8th and 9th March 2022 for reviewing quality of
execution of protection work of land slide. On assessment and review of carried out
work chainage- wise observations and suggestions are given below:

4.1 Ch. 436+720 to 436+870

1. The protection work carried out from Ch. 436+720 to 436+870 along National
Highway near the Village Birahi. The land slide area comprises phyllitic
Banded Quartzite, which are dipping at 65o to 70o towards valley. The
exposed rock acted vulnerable in rock mass. Most of the joints plane dipping
towards valley side and few joints dipping into the hill.
2. Design and proposed protection measures are adequate for this land slide.
3. Slope Protection work carried out M/s NKG, which are under progress at the
time of site visit (Refer Photo-1).
4. The quality of self drill bolt, wire mesh etc. are good. But at several location
shotcreting is not proper, nuts and plates of anchor are not tight, Bolts are
not properly grouted.
5. Stretch in active land slide and Designer recommended protection work to
stabilize the exposed rock along the road alignment.
6. It is suggested by Designer to Construction Agency to remove the vulnerable
wedges from the hill slope and immediate stitch the failure blocks by self
drilled rock bolts with 32 mm Dia, 5m long @ 2m spacing c/c with
plates & nut-bolts and fully grout anchors by cement with accelerated
material and also use wire mesh 10 x 10 x 5 mm and 100 mm shotcreting
(Refer Photo-2).
7. It is suggested that 1% rock bolt required to pull out test to know the
bounding strength of rock between the self drilled rock bolt and rock for
further assessment of bounding strength.

8. Unprotected area nearby slide zone is also recommended for stabilization

before start of monsoon to avoid any land slide during monsoon.

Ch. 436+720 to 436+870 and Ch. 429+390 to 429+490

9. All the nuts and bolt shall be properly aligned and tightened; grouting shall be
done in sequences with thinner grout to thicker grout. If require two stage
grouting shall be done to optimize the consumption of cement.
10. Grout consumption report and pull-out test result shall be provided.
11. Shotcreting shall be done such that no wire mesh shall be exposed and during
the laying of wire-mesh overlapping shall be done properly.
12. Drainage arrangement to channelize the water shall be made before the
monsoon.

4.2 Ch. 429+390 to 429+490

1. The protection work carried out from Ch. 429+390 to 429+490 along National
Highway near the Kshetrapal. The land slide area comprises over burden
material consisting of detached rock boulders and medium to coarse sandy
matrix with fine material.
2. Design and proposed protection measures are adequate for this land slide.
3. Slope Protection work carried out M/s NKG, which are under progress at the
time of site visit (Refer Photo-3).
4. The quality of self-drill bolt, DT mesh, Rhomboidal and coir mat etc. are good.
5. The work of removal of vulnerable over burden from the hill slope is
completed by Construction Agency at the time of site visit.

6. Close to the road for about 6 m height gabion wall erected with self drilled
rock bolts with 32 mm dia, 8m/6m long @ 2m spacing c/c wit plates & nut-
bolts in staggered pattern and fully grouted by cement with accelerated
material with DT Mesh and rhomboidal wire net (Refer Photo-4).

7. About 80% protection work completed according to design of protection

suggested and further work is under progress.
8. It is suggested that 1% rock bolt required to pull out test to know the
bounding strength in over burden between the self drilled rock bolt and over
burden for further assessment of bounding strength.

9. Unprotected area nearby slide zone is also recommended for stabilization

before start of monsoon to avoid any land slide during monsoon.
10. All the nuts and bolt shall be properly aligned and tightened; grouting shall be
done in sequences with thinner grout to thicker grout. If require two stage
grouting shall be done to optimize the consumption of cement.

11. Grout consumption report and pull-out test result shall be provided.

12. Drainage arrangement to channelize the water shall be made before the
monsoon.

13. All the deposited debris and bulged gabion wall shall be rectified. If damaged
gabion shall be replaced.

6 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

During the site visit it was mutually agreed that workman ship of some the executed
protection measures mainly SDA anchorage, Shotcreting, grouting of bolt was below
average and it is suggested to improve workmanship and below mentioned common
items shall be rectified on priority basis before the completion.

 Tightening of nuts and plates shall be checked and done properly.

 Grouting of rock bolt /SDA shall be done properly and record for grout
consumption shall be done on regular basis.
 Spraying of shotcreting over wire mesh shall be ensured to have adequate
thickness.
 At all locations wire mesh overlap shall be done properly.
 Lag in installation anchoring, grouting, wire mesh and shotcreting shall be
minimized.

 Channelization of water shall be done as indicated in drawings.

 Repair and cleaning of damaged gabion shall be done.
