METHODS OF RESEARCH
Midterm Examination

Name: VANESSA A. PAMPARO PERMIT NO: 0575

Professor: ELENA C. PRAXIDES, Ed D

QUESTIONS:

I. Discuss briefly the following:

1. What is Research?
 The creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and
creative way to generate new concepts, methodologies, and understandings. This
could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads
to new and creative outcomes

2. What is the importance of research?

 The importance of research is the following:
1. Research expands your knowledge base
2. Research gives you the latest information
3. Research helps you know what you’re up against
4. Research builds your credibility
5. Research helps you narrow your scope
6. Research teaches you better discernment
7. Research introduces you to new ideas
8. Research helps with problem-solving
9. Research helps you reach people
10. Research encourages curiosity

3. How do you consider a good research problem?

 A research problem should be clear, concise, and specific enough to guide the
process and contribute to the definition of research project objectives, methods, and
outcomes. It is the foundation of any research project, and a well-formulated
research problem is required for any research study to be successful.

4. What are the things to be cited in the presentation of the related studies?
 The things to be cited in the presentation of the related studies include the name of
the book, article, or other resource; the name of its author; information (if
applicable) about the journal it came from; the date it was published; and when it
was accessed if it was read online.

II- Compare and differentiate the following:

1. Assumption from hypothesis

 The difference between a hypothesis and an assumption is that the first is typically
explicit and the second implicit. A hypothesis is what you are testing explicitly in
an experiment. An assumption is tested implicitly

2. Related studies from related literature

 Related literature is often from journalists or any officials whereas the opinions and
facts presented matter and can affect the masses' opinion and thinking. Related
Studies are from researchers or official public offices, and theses from different
universities and libraries.

3. Theoretical from conceptual framework

 While the theoretical framework outlines how more abstract-level theories shape
the study, the conceptual framework operationalizes the empirical observations
that can be connected to theory and broader understanding. Understanding these
differences is crucial when designing and conducting your research study.

III- Describe briefly the following research design:

1. Descriptive
 Aims to systematically obtain information to describe a phenomenon, situation, or
population. More specifically, it helps answer the what, when, where, and how
questions regarding the research problem rather than the why.

2. Correlational
 Investigates relationships between variables without the researcher controlling or
manipulating any of them. A correlation reflects the strength and/or direction of
the relationship between two (or more) variables.

3. Evaluative
 Is a research method used to evaluate a product or concept and collect data to help
improve your solution. It offers many benefits, including identifying whether a
product works as intended and uncovering areas for improvement.

4. Experimental
 A research method used to investigate the interaction between independent and
dependent variables, which can be used to determine a cause-and-effect
relationship. Experimental research is commonly used within the framework of
the scientific method.

5. Feasibility
 Pieces of research done before a main study to answer the question 'Can this study
be done? ' They are used to estimate important parameters that are needed to
design the main study”. Data collected would not be analyzed or included in
publications.

6. Developmental
 Techniques used particularly in lifespan development research. When we are
trying to describe development and change, the research designs become
especially important because we are interested in what changes and what stays the
same with age.
