ABSTRACT
Without practical experience theoretical knowledge is incomplete. In our program
of EEE we have studied courses related to Transformer, Transmission and
Distribution of Electrical power and Protection of the system. To implement our
learning practically we needed to visit and observe the operation of the equipments
and systems. We have visited IIUC Substation 03 on this purpose and fulfilled our
experience about practical knowledge.

INTRODUCTION TO IIUC SUB-STATION 03

1.1 Introduction

International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) is one of the top graded Government
approved private universities in Bangladesh. In 2004 IIUC was recognized as one of the 9 top-
graded Private Universities by a Government-appointed High Powered Team led by the UGC
Chairman.

At present, IIUC is the largest private university with 370 (Full time: 270 & Adjunct: 100)
teachers and 14000 students. IIUC is a large consumer of PGCB with several buildings and
laboratories. It has 3 substations and Faculty of Science & Engineering (FSE) Building is one
of the major consumer buildings.

➢ Substation 01 - (830 KVA) _ Main Substation beside entrance of IIUC permanent

campus.

➢ Substation 02 - (630 KVA) _ Substation behind BBA Faculty Building.

➢ Substation 03 - (630 KVA) _ Substation beside FSE Building 01.

In this visit, we have visited the sub-station 03 which is situated beside FSE and supplies
electricity to FSE Building 01.

1.2 Motives of The Visit

The objectives of the visit are -

◼ To observe the operation of the 630 KVA transformer.

◼ To observe the protection system of the substation.

◼ To observe the distribution system.

◼ To observe the operation of VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker) .

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
2.1 Components and Equipments Observed
We have observed operation of the following components.
❖ Drop Out Fuse

❖ VCB - Vacuum Circuit Breaker

❖ Earth Fault Relay

❖ 11 KV transmission line

❖ Digital & Analog Power Meter

❖ MCCB

❖ Transformer

❖ Generator
❖ Power Factor Improvement Unit
❖ Automatic Transfer Switch Panel

❖ Feeder Distribution Lines

2.2 Drop Out Fuse

Drop Out Fuses are protection devices that protect networks and equipment from current surges
and overloads. An overcurrent will melt the fuse element in the carrier disconnecting the line or
equipment. They also provide network isolation points when manually operated with a hot stick.

3
2.3 VCB - Vacuum Circuit Breaker

The A vacuum circuit breaker is a kind of circuit breaker where the arc quenching takes place
in vacuum medium. The operation of switching on and closing of current carrying contacts
and interrelated arc interruption takes place in a vacuum chamber in the breaker which is
called vacuum interrupter.

Figure 2.2 - Vacuum Circuit Breaker

2.4 Earth Fault Relay

It is a safety device used in electrical installations with high earth impedance. It detects
small stray voltages on the metal enclosures of electrical equipment. The result is to interrupt
the circuit if a dangerous voltage is detected. The EFR is protected against tripping
from transient and prevents shock.

4
2.5 11 KV transmission line
The substation is fed with a 3 phase 11 KV transmission line. It entered the substation
from West-South corner

2.6 Digital & Analog Power Meter

The Digital and analog power meter are mounted on the HT (High Tension) Panel. We can
read the entering Voltage, Current and Power Factor from these equipments reading.

5
2.7 MCCB - Molded Case Circuit Breaker
MCCB stands for Molded Case Circuit Breaker. It is another type of electrical protection
device which is used when load current exceeds the limit of a miniature circuit breaker.
The MCCB provides protection against overload, short circuit faults and is also used for
switching the circuits. It can be used for higher current rating and fault level. The wide current
ratings and high breaking capacity in MCCB find their use in industrial applications. MCCBs
are used for protection of capacitor bank, generator protection and main electric feeder
distribution having rating 40A, 80A, 160A, 200A 400A, 630A, 1000A. they offers adequate
protection when an application requires discrimination, adjustable overload setting or
earth fault protection.

Figure 2.6 - Main MCCB of 1000A Rating.

Figure 2,7 - Different MCCBs of rating 40A to 1000A.

6
2.8 Transformer
A transformer is a passive electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one electrical
circuit to another, or multiple circuits. A varying current in any one coil of the transformer
produces a varying magnetic flux in the transformer's core, which induces a varying
electromotive force across any other coils wound around the same core. Electrical energy can
be transferred between separate coils without a metallic (conductive) connection.

A step-down 3 phase transformer is used for decreasing high AC voltage of 11KV to low
voltage of 440V is used in the substation.

Figure 2.8 - 11KV/440V 3 phase Transformer,

7
2.9 Generator
The generator is used as a power back up during load shedding and power failure of main
line. The rating of this French generator is 250 KVA.

Figure 2.9 - 250 KVA P250h-3 FG Wilson Generator.

8
2.10 Power Factor Improvement (PFI) Unit
A PFI unit has been used as per PGCB demand to improve the power factor near about
unity. It is made by a bulk of condensers connected in parallel and each having a circuit
breaker and a controlling switch. The PFI unit can control the Power Factor either
aromatically or manually.

Figure 2.10 - Power Factor Improvement Unit.

9
2.11 Automatic Transfer Switch Panel
An Automatic transfer switch panel, or ATS panel, is a type of transfer panel used with a diesel
generator to automatically switch between the mains and generator in the event of a power
failure.

The generator will start / stop automatically depending on the mains supply. The mains
power coming into contact with the generator, which would almost certainly burn out if
this happened.

It stops the generator from back feeding the mains when its failed, endangering the lives of
electricity utility workers.

10
2.12 Feeder Distribution Lines
The feeder distributor lines are insulated properly from each other. They went out together
from the substation to the North and then according to the loads situated.

HT Panel

Transformer

LT Panel

PFI Unit

Generator ATS Panel ELT

At first the high voltage 11KV line enters to the HT panel where VCB and measuring
transformers are mounted. Then it goes to the transformer which steps down the voltage
from 11KV to 440V/230V. Then This lowered voltage lines goes to the LT panel bus-bar
where several MCCBs are used as protection devices.

After the LT panel there is a PFI unit which can automatically improve the power factor using
condenser bank. Each condenser is connected to a MCCB in series and each has a manual
control switch. The ATS panel decides whether to supply with main through LT panel or to
supply with generator through ELT panel.

The ELT panel is similar to the LT panel but there is no PFI unit while supplying with the
generator through ELT panel.
