- Nanotechnology refers to
the science, engineering,

It employs the study and
application of
exceptionally small
things in other areas of
science including
materials science,

1. What do you think Climate (Answers may vary)

Change is?

2. How does climate change

affect people? (Use Venn (Answers may vary)

Explain INTRODUCTION:
Climate Change

- Refers to the significantly

changes in climate for
continuous period of
time.
- Factors that contribute to
climate change are
natural internal
processes, external
factors, and persistent
anthropogenic changes.
- Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change
(IPCC), a united nation’s
body that evaluates
climate changes,
releases its report on
climate change.

Natural Causes of Climate

Change

1. Volcanic Eruption
- When a volcanic erupts,
it emits natural aerosols
like carbon and sulfur
dioxides, salt crystals,
volcanic ashes or dust or
even microorganisms
and bacteria.
- It can cause a cooling
effect to the lithosphere.

University of Southern Mindanao

2. Orbital Changes
- proposed by Milankovitch
Theory.
- It states that as the Earth
travel through space
around the sun., cyclical
variations in three
elements of earth-sun
geometry combine to
produce variations in the
amount of solar energy
that reaches Earth
(Academia Emporia,
2017).

Three Elements of Earth-Sun

Geometry

1. Eccentricity
- is a term used to
describe the shape of the
Earth’s orbit around the
sun.
- Academic Emporia
(2017), “the eccentricity
influences seasonal
differences: When Earth

University of Southern Mindanao
College of Education

is closest to the sun, it
gets more solar radiation.
If the perihelion occurs
during the winter, the
winter is less severe. If
the hemisphere has a
summer, while closest to
the sun, the summer is
more warm.’”

2. Obliquity
- It is the variation of the
tilt of Earth’s axis away
from the orbital plane.
- Academic Emporia, “the
more tilt means more
severe seasons; warmer
summers, cold winters;
less tilt means less sever
seasons; cooler
summers, milder winter.”

3. Precession
- It is the change in
orientation of the earth’
rotational axis.
- It is caused by two
factors: wobble of earth’
axis and turning around
of the elliptical orbit of
the earth itself.
- The change in the axis
location changes the
dates of perihelion
(closest distance from
the Sun) and aphelion

(farthest). This increases
the seasonal contrast in
one hemisphere while
decreasing it in the other
hemisphere.

Carbon Dioxide Theory

- Carbon Dioxide or CO² is
transparent to sunshine
but not visible to infrared
(heat) radiation leaving
the ground.
- Doubling the carbon
dioxide raises the
temperature to 2°C to
3°C.

Human Activities

Burning of Fossil Fuels

- the largest known
human activity that
contributes to climate
change which releases
carbon dioxide gas to the
atmosphere.
- Greenhouse gases and
aerosols affect climate by
altering incoming solar
radiation and outgoing
infrared (thermal)
radiation that are part of
Earth’ energy balance.
- This can lead to a
Republic of the Philippines
University of Southern Mindanao
College of Education
Secondary Education Department
warming and cooling of
the climate system.
-Since the start of
Industrial era (1750), the
overall effect of human
activities on climate has
been a warming
influence.

4 Principal Greenhouse
Gases
- These greenhouses
gases are natural gases.
However, high level of
these gases contributes
to the greenhouse effect.

1. Carbon Dioxide (CO²) –

used in transportation, building,
heating, cooling, and
manufacture of cement and
other goods. Deforestation
releases CO² and reduces its
uptake by plants.

2. Methane (CH⁴) – related to

University of Southern Mindanao
College of Education
Secondary Education Department
agriculture, natural gas
distributions, and landfills.

3. Nitrous Oxides (N²O) –

emitted by human activities
such as fertilizer use, and fossil
fuel burning.

4. Halocarbons – are group of

gases containing fluorine,
chlorine, and bromine. The
principal halocarbons are the
CFC’s (CFC-11 & CFC-12)
were used as refrigeration
agents before and was found to
cause stratospheric ozone
depletion.
- The abundance of CFC is
decreasing as a result
international regulations
designed to protect the ozone
layer (The Encyclopedia of
Earth, 2016).
Republic of the Philippines
University of Southern Mindanao
College of Education
Secondary Education Department

Ozone – is another greenhouse

gas that is continually produced
and destroyed in the
atmosphere by chemical
reactions.

Water Vapor – is the most

abundant and important
greenhouse gas in the
atmosphere.
- Human activities also
influence through CH⁴
emissions.
- Aerosols are the small
particles present in the
atmosphere with widely
varying size,
concentrations, and
chemical compositions.

The Montreal Protocol

- Adapted on September
16, 1986.
- An international treaty
aimed to regulate the

production and use of
chemicals that contribute
to the ozone layer
depletion (Britannica,
2017).

Effects of Climate Change on

Society

- It can direct affects the

basic elements of
people's lives like water,
food, health, use of land,
and the environment.

- Glaciers will melt faster.

Republic of the Philippines
University of Southern Mindanao
College of Education
Secondary Education Department

- Increasing flood risks,

reducing water supplies,
and reducing crop yields
due to drought.

- Ocean edification will

have major effects on
marine ecosystems, with
possible adverse
consequences on fish
stocks.

- Climate change will

increase worldwide
deaths from malnutrition
and heat stress.
Republic of the Philippines
University of Southern Mindanao
College of Education
Secondary Education Department

- Vector-bome diseases
such as malaria and
dengue fever.

- Climate change will have

disproportionately more
damaging consequences
with increased warming,
leading to regional
disruption, migration,
conflict, and shifts in
regional weather
patterns.

Elaborate 1. Application

Since you already understand

our topic. Here are the
questions for all of you. Write
your answers in a ½ sheet of
paper.

1. What are the natural causes - The natural causes of

of climate change? climate change are
volcanic eruptions and
orbital changes.

2. What are the human activities - The human activities

that contributes to the climate that contributes to the
change? climate change are
burning of fossil fuels
because these release
carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere that
causes too much heat
and ozone layer
depletion;
deforestation because
trees absorb carbon
dioxide during
photosynthesis. If they
are cut down, there
will be higher amounts
of carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere; coal
mining because coal is
the single biggest
contributor to
anthropogenic climate
change, etc.

Including retrofitting
buildings to make
them more energy

renewable energy
sources like solar,

helping cities develop
more sustainable
