1. Why engineers are considered an important segment of the society?

Engineering is one of the key influences that shapes our society. Engineers don't just
work with machines, designs and electronics, they use maths and science to provide
innovation and inventions that shape our society and improve the way we live and work.

In fact, engineers have completely changed the world we live in, from modern
homes, bridges, space travel, cars and the latest mobile technology. Innovative ideas
are at the heart of what engineers do, and they use their knowledge to create new and
exciting prospects and solve any problems that may arise.

2. What are expected of engineers in general?

Engineers must be able to design a system, component, or process to meet desired

needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political,
ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability. They also must know
the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a
global, economic, environmental, and societal context.

Engineers must also design solutions that addresses the needs of diverse peoples
in diverse cultures in ways that are user-friendly. That does not harm the natural
environment in which we all live.

3. In what current concerns are engineering outputs needed?

Engineering outputs are needed in every aspect of this current modern age, hence,
and engineer in every aspect of society from a general towards a specialization. Such
current concerns are the following: agriculture, elimination of pollution may it be air,
water, land, and etc., solid waste disposal, supplying the needs of the people like
energy, supplying the increasing demand for mobility and demand for communication
facilities and many more.

4. In what areas are engineers currently involved?

A broad area is covered by the engineering principle such that engineers performs
job which are beneficial to the society such as research, design, development, testing,
manufacturing, construction, sales, consulting, government, teaching and management.
5. How many organizations be classified according the engineering jobs
performed?

There are three types of organizations that can be classified according to the
engineering jobs performed from level one to level three. Level one- minimal engineering
jobs (retailing firms.) Level two – moderate degree of engineering jobs (transportation
companies). Lastly, Level three – high degree of engineering jobs (construction firms).

6. Which organization level requires the highest management skills for engineer
managers?

Level Three requires the highest management skills for engineering managers
because this is the highest level, which means there are more people under the firm
that needs to be managed. Also, there are loads of work to do since this is already a big
firm so engineer managers should have the highest management skills.

7. What is engineering management?

Engineering management refers to the activity combining “technical knowledge

with the ability to organize and coordinate worker power, materials, machinery, and
money.” When the engineer is assigned to supervise the work of even a few people, he
is already engaged in the first phase of engineering management. His main
responsibility is to lead his group into producing a certain output consistent with the
required specifications.

8. How one may define management?

Management may be defined as the “creative problem solving process of

planning, organizing, leading, and controlling an organization’s resources to achieve its
mission and objectives.”

9. What qualifications must an engineer manager have?

The engineer manager must have the following qualifications:

1. a bachelor’s degree ion engineering from a reputable school; In some cases a

master’s degree in engineering or business management is required;

2. a few years experience in pure engineering job;

3. training in supervision;

4. special training in engineering management

10. How may one become a successful engineer manger?

Kreitner indicates at least three general preconditions for achieving lasting success
as a manager.

 Ability

- refers to the capacity of an engineer manager to achieve organizational objectives

effectively and efficiently.

 Motivation to manage

- John B. Miner, developed a psychometric instrument to measure objectively an

individual’s motivation to mange. The test is anchored to the following dimensions:

1. Favorable attitude toward those in positions of authority, such as superiors.

2. Desire to engage in games or sports competition with peers.

3. Desire to engage in occupational or work-related competition with peers.

4. Desire to assert oneself and take charge.

5. Desire to exercise power and authority over others.

6. Desire to behave in a distinctive way, which includes standing out from the crowd.

7. Sense of responsibility in carrying out the routine duties associated with managerial
work.

 Opportunity

- Successful managers become possible only if those having the ability and motivation
are given the opportunity to mange. The opportunity for successful management has
two requirements namely obtaining a suitable managerial job, and finding a supportive
climate once on the job.
