CLASSIFICATION OF SCIENCE 5

WASTE MATERIALS

Prepared by: Chester Allan M. Eduria

Materials undergo change when they are
used.

• Their physical appearance

changes as evidence of
use.
• They are discarded when
they no longer serve the
purpose for which they
are made.
But…

They make our

surroundings ugly
and with unpleasant
odors. They
POLLUTE our
environment.
Plastics alone have harmful effect to environment if
dispose improperly.
Trivia

• Different kinds of plastic can degrade at

different times, but the average time for a
plastic bottle to completely degrade is at
least 450 years. It can even take some
bottles 1000 years to biodegrade! That's a
long time for even the smallest bottle.

There are many ways to dispose materials.

We need to classify
them through
segregation scheme.

Materials are classified through Segregation
Scheme. We have four classifications.

• BIODEGRADABLE WASTE
• HAZARDOUS WASTE
• NON-BIODEGRADABLE
WASTE • PATHOLOGICAL OR
INFECTIOUS WASTE
BIODEGRADABLE

• Materials that decompose or decays.

• They become part of the soil in time.
• They become compost or organic
fertilizer which is used to enrich the
soil and utilized by plants.

NON BIODEGRADABLES

•Materials that do not decay easily

•They accumulate if not disposed
properly
•Takes a long time to decompose
However….

They can be
recycled and
reused!

Hazardous Wastes

• Materials that contain toxic

substance
• Dangerous to people’s health and to
the environment.

Pathological Waste

• Waste that carry disease-causing

organisms
• From hospital wastes, syringes, gauzes
and dead animals.

not recycled?

waste?
