What are the Mighty Mitochondria?

Watch the following video and answer the

questions below:
1. Where are mitochondria found? In the cell

2. Mitochondria take in ______________ and convert it to

__________. Fat, sugar, protien make into oxygen

3. What is found in mitochondria that is crucial to the energy

conversion process? Their own dna

4. What are some of the things that can happen if mitochondria

do not function properly? Cells run out of energy and die
Energy Makers
Mitochondria are complex machine-like organelles that convert oxygen and
compounds like sugar into carbon dioxide, energy, and water. The energy is actually
a molecule called ATP.

*Use the shapes/lines from menu above (under the “Insert” tab if using Google Slides) to illustrate sugar and oxygen
entering the mitochondria and ATP, carbon dioxide, and water leaving it.
Label your shapes and use arrows to show what is going in/out.
What is ATP ?

ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate. The molecule in the top right hand corner of
this slide is adenosine triphosphate. If the prefix tri- means three, then where do you
suppose the three phosphates are in the molecule above?

Draw a circle around the phosphates in the molecule above.

What is ATP ?

ATP carries energy for your cells. Work with a partner to think of as many cellular
activities that require energy as you can:

Some Cells Do Not Use Oxygen During Respiration….This Is
Called FERMENTATION
Click here to watch a TedEd video about how fermentation can be used to make
products like bread. Then answer the questions below:

1. What is yeast? Single celled fungi used to make different profudcts

Here are some cells
2. What is fermentation? Co2 bubbles escape from the bread
that can undergo
fermentation: 3. Why is bread soft & airy? The co2 bubble get stuck

4. What other biological organisms were mentioned in the video to make foods?
Bacteria acidic acid lactic acid

✘ Yeast 5. Biotechnology refers to the use of natural biological processes to develop or make a
product. Work with a partner to think of another non-food product created with
✘ Muscle Cells biotechnology. Cottage cheese
