Watching Ice Melt

By: Cielo Bella Chester

Question

What substance makes ice melt faster, sugar, cinnamon, P.A.N.,

Tajin, baking soda, or salt?
Hypothesis

I believe the ice with the salt added will melt the fastest.
Materials Needed
› Ice (about 27 cubes)
› A cupcake tin
› A Timer
› 1 ½ Tablespoons each of:
– Sugar
– Cinnamon
– P.A.N.
– Tajin
– Baking Soda
– Salt
Procedure
› Add 3 cubes each to nine cupcake cups. (You want the same
amount in each)
› Add 1 ½ tablespoons of sugar to the first cup, 1 ½ tbs of
cinnamon to the second, 1 ½ tbs of P.A.N. to the third and so
on until there is 1 ½ tbs of each substance in its own cup.
› The last three cupcake tins will be left as just ice as controls.
› Set a timer for 10 minutes.
› Every 10 minutes, check the ice and make observations on
the melting of the different cups of ice.
› Continue to do this for about 60 minutes, or until the first cup
of ice is melted.
› At the end, record your results.

Conclusion
My original hypothesis was correct. According to the data and
what I observed, salt made the ice melt fastest. What I observed
though is that it was a close thing. The Tajin was close the whole
time, but that makes sense because it includes salt in it, even if it is
mixed with other things. The thing that surprised me was how
close salt was to sugar. Also, towards the end, the heavier
substance: cinnamon and P.A.N. seemed to fall behind the control
ice, and that was unexpected as well. In the end though, salt won
out.
