T-SHIRT Quality Analysis

Sophia Shute
Point of Sale Evaluation
 When I bought the shirt at the beginning of the Spring semester it was
brand new. At 12$ from the clearance aisle at Target, it appeared
untouched; no loose threads, holes, stretched out, wrinkled, or
obviously faded.
 I think the color might fade a little, it won’t stay as bright after a
while.
 The fit of the garment is a relaxed crop top that is fitted on the arms
and comes in a little at the bottom with a little drape on the stomach. I
think after a few washes it fit a little tighter around the stomach.

MEASUREMENTS
1st Laundering

• Worn February 1st and washed the same day.

• Washed in hot water and tumbled dried.
• The shirt had the same vibrant color and the material was soft. It did
feel a little tighter around the neck, sleeves, and waist.
2nd Laundering

• Worn March 2nd and washed the same day

• I washed the shirt in warm water and I tumbled dried for 60
minutes.
• The shirts color is the same, it looks a little smaller. It’s still hard to
get into. It hangs evenly and doesn’t look completely ruined.
3rd Laundering

• I wore the shirt on April 21st and washed it the next day.
• I washed it in warm water and tumble dried it for 50 minutes.
• Surprisingly, the shirt sill has its vibrant color. It is really hard to
put on and hard to take off. It’s too tight and uncomfortable to wear.
Despite the fact that it’s too small now, it still kinda looks the same
as the day I bought it.
Chapter 6 Fit

• The five elements of fit are grain, set, line, balance and ease. The lengthwise grain of
the fabric on my shirt runs parallel, straight down the center back and center front. The
crosswise grains run perpendicular to the length of the shirt. The garment hangs evenly
and is symmetrical. The set it a little tense, there are horizontal wrinkles along the chest
and back. It fits a bit tighter than supposed to and it’s now uncomfortable to wear.
There’s now barely any fitting ease, it’s hard to put over the head and it’s tight. The line
of the garment is on point. It curves to the body and accentuates the figure, even if it is
small. The garment does have a good balance, there is equilibrium. The way it naturally
hangs, you could fold it in half lengthwise and it would match the other half perfectly.
Chapter 7 Fabric
1. There are no flaws on the T shirt; no pilling, wrinkles, holes, loose threads, seam failures. A modal blend holds up the shape and texture of the garment.
2. The appearance of the fabric looks good with the way it was made. Joylab is a workout line and this shirt is a modal/polyester blend so it’s very breathable,
durable, and being mixed with polyester it’s non-absorbent when exercising.
3. The color of the garment is very consistent with the garment. It’s vibrant all around because modal holds dyes very well even after a few washes.
4. The hand of the fabric is suitable for its design. It’s very breathable and it’s soft. It’s a good workout shirt plus the fabric is eco-friendly!
5. The fabric retained its shape after wearing and washing but the size shrunk to where I can’t use it for its intended purpose. The modal/polyblend really helped it
hold its shape. If I had originally bought the shirt in my size of small at the time and not extra small, then maybe the shrinking wouldn’t have been that bad.
6. The fabric grain looks true. The shirt hangs straight and isn’t twisted.
7. The fabric is colorfast, it’s doesn’t bleed dye during laundering and has maintained its bright color.
8. The fabric does resist wrinkles. It comes from polyester being wrinkle resistant and modal also resisting wrinkles and staying smooth.
9. Modal is 50% more hygroscopic than cotton so the fabric absorbs any water or sweat it comes across. And polyester isn’t absorbent.
10. The fabric does have a good wicking because it’s end use is for exercising and the fabric chosen for it contains polyester which as a synthetic blend is a
moisture wicking fabric that’s very quick drying and lightweight. And modal has fibers that are naturally wicking because its derived from a plant.
11. The fabric is very easy to care for, you can wash it normally. However the only issue is that as a consumer, I didn’t fully understand that washing and drying in
hot water contributes to this fabrics shrinkage and I did just that.
12. It seems the fabrics finishes are permanent. The fabric has maintained a good level of antistatic; has good moisture management; shrinkage control (when
laundered right); it’s still very soft; it’s wrinkle resistant even after a few washes and when it sits in my clean laundry hamper for a while and I think it’s singed
because it doesn’t pill.
Chapter 8 Trim

1. On my garment there are three findings; 2 labels and fabric tie. The label is a necessity for the t-shirt and the fabric tie works well with the rest of the garment.
Because of its placement it on the lower back, it gives some balance and weight and to the lightweight fabric. The tie does also add extra style to the otherwise
plain shirt.
2. The tie has held up throughout normal wear and care of the garment. The hanging fabric has kind of twisted on itself after washing. The main label was
removed but there Is a smaller one still intact and it looks brand new still.
3. The label was uncomfortable, so it was removed. There is another printed label on the back of the neck that’s printed that isn’t uncomfortable. The fabric tie is
comfortable since I can’t feel it on the outside of the fabric and the material it’s made from is the same modal polyester blend the rest of the shirt is made of so
it’s just as soft.
4. The label is a white background and black letters, but it’s on the inside so that doesn’t matter. The fabric tie is the same color as the t-shirt and it has also kept
its color.
5. The label was not comfortable; it kept scratching my side, so I removed it.
6. As far as right now, the smaller label on the inside bottom left of the shirt is still intact, legible and hasn’t faded. The printed label on the back of the neck is still
readable and hasn’t cracked but I predict over a few years the letters will crack.
7. The fabric tie isn’t held by a thread, it’s the same fabric of the shirt that’s been cut into two separating pieces and they’re tied together. The original label’s
thread was well secured and couldn’t be pulled off without scissors or a knife.
8. The trims do meet required consumer compliance laws. They have the fiber content, country of origin, manufacturer importer and/or dealer.
Chapter 9 Stitches

1. It looks like there is a little bit of seam puckering along the top shoulder stitches.
2. There are no seam grins.
3. The stitches are extensible.
4. The stitches are comfortable when worn, you can’t even feel them.
5. The stitches are very neat and in straight lines.
6. There are a few medium sized threads inside the garment that could be trimmed.
Chapter 10 Seams and Edge

1. The seam and edge treatments are appropriate to the fabric. Joylab is medium priced line and the
products reflect that, they’re not luxury quality but not cheap online quality like Shein, Romwe,
and Pretty Little Things.
2. The seams are very well secured; they’re resistant to raw edge and seam failure.
3. The seams aren’t bulky but a little wide on the inside of the garment. There’s a little bit of seam
pucker on the shoulders.
4. The seams are accurately placed on the seam line, they’re neat and consistent all the way through
the garment.
5. The seams that intersect the other seams from shoulder to armhole, or under armpit to the
lengthwise of the garment are reinforced.
