WELDING ELECTRODE SPECIFICATION

WHAT IS AN ELECTRODE ?

• Electrode is define as the metal which sole purpose is to the carry the current
and sustain the electric arc between tip of this metal and workpiece in some
cases it melts itself as well as supplies filler metal.
TYPES OF ELECTRODE

Electrode

CONSUMABLE ELECTRODE

• It carry current and melted it self and supplies filler metal to the
joint is called consumable electrode.
NON CONSUMABLE ELECTRODE

• This type of electrode is act as conductor or current carrying from

electrode holder to base metal in gas metal arc welding.

SIZE OF ELECTRODE

Size of the welding electrode refer to core diameter.

Commonly 2.5mm,3mm,4mm,5mm,6.3mm welding electrode used.

MILD STEEL ELECTRODES SPECIFICATION

• Arc welding electrodes are identified using the A.W.S,

(American Welding Society).
• It is specified by EXXXX.
• “E” designates for welding electrode
EXXXX (FIRST TWO DIGITS)

• EXXXX first two numbers refer to tensile strength of the

deposited weld metal.
FOR EXAMPLE : E6013,
“60” means 60, 000 psi tensile strength of the deposited weld
metal.
EXX X X THIRD NUMBER

• EXX X X third number is denoting the Position in

which the electrode can be used.
1) EXX1X is for use in all positions.
2) EXX2X is for use in flat and horizontal positions.
3) EXX3X is for flat welding.
EXXXX LAST NUMBER REFERS TO
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

• “0” CELLULOSE- SODIUM

• “1” CELLULOSE- POTASSIUM
• “2” RUTILE –SODIUM
• “3” RUTILE – POTASSIUM
• “4” RUTILE IRON POWDER
• “5,6,8” LOW HYDROGEN
EXXXX THE LAST TWO NUMBERS
TOGETHER INDICATE THE TYPE OF
WELDING CURRENT
• EXXXX The last two numbers together indicate the
type of welding current the electrode can be used
with.
