Representing real
life situation using
rational functions

2
Examples: Representing real life situation using rational
functions
•The  school distributes ₱200,000 to each scholar students in
there school. The amount given will be equally given to the
scholar students.
Write an equation representing of the allotted amount per
scholar student (y-variable) versus the total number of
scholarship students.

rational function,
rational equation and
rational inequality

4
Examples: Distinguishes rational function
•

(a) (Rational Equation)

(b) f (x) = ( Rational Function)

(c) 6x ≤ ( Rational Inequality)

(d) 6x ≤ ( None of these)

5
Examples: Rational equation
Example:

x+2 3
8 = 4

4x+8=24

4x=24-8

4x = 16
4 4

x=4

6
Examples: Solves Rational Inequality
•Solve
  the simple rational inequality:
3, x ≠ 2

Case 1: x – 2 < 0 x<2 Case 2: x – 2 > 0 x>2

(x-2) ≥ 3 (x-2) (x-2) ≤ 3 (x-2)
6 ≥ 3x – 6 6 ≥ 3x – 6
-3x ≥ -12 -3x ≤ -12
x 4 x≥4

Therefore, Since x < 2 and x 4, therefore x < 2 Therefore, Since x < 2 and x 4, therefore x < 2

the solution is

function through its: (a)
table of values, (b)
graph, and (c) equation.

Examples: Represent a rational function using graph
• The graph for the parent function,  f(x) =1x  f(x) =1x  is a
hyperbola .
• Let's find the value of the function for different values of x.
• x = -4, f(x) = -0.25
• x = -2, f(x) = -0.5
• x = -1, f(x) = -1
• x = 1, f(x) = 1
• x = 2, f(x) = 0.5
• x = 4, f(x) = 0.25
• So, as  x x  get large the function keeps the sign of x x  and
gets smaller and smaller.
• Similarly, as function approache x =0x =0, the function again
keeps the same sign as x x  but starts getting quite large.
• Here is the sketch

Examples: Represent a rational function through its
equation.
•
2.) =

5 (x – 3) = 3x + 5
5x – 15 = 3x + 5
5x – 3x = 5 + 15
2x = 20

x =10
