CONNECTIONS AMONG
THE GREAT SPHERES
Why should we discuss the Earth System ?
A closed system !
EARTH’S FOUR
SPHERES
Atmosphere: gaseous envelope that
surrounds the Earth and constitutes the
transition between its surface and the vacuum
of space
The stratosphere
(10 to 50 km),
•The troposphere (0-10 contains ozone that
km) constitutes the protects life on the
climate system that planet by filtering
maintains the conditions harmful ultraviolet
suitable for life on the radiation from the
planet's surface. Sun.
LAYERS OF THE
ATMOSPHERE
• Troposphere
• Stratosphere
• Mesosphere
• Thermosphere
• Exosphere
TROPOSPHERE
• The first layer of the atmosphere
• Extend from the earth surface about 12 ½ miles in
the sky,
• Weather formed.
• Water evaporates from lands to become snow or rain.
• The vapor contributes to the green house effect.
(traps the suns heat close to our planet) (warm and
cold)
• Hot air balloon fly from this layer.
STRATOSPHERE
• Layer above the Troposphere.
• 31 miles up.
• Contains 20% of earth gas.
• Ozone layer found on this layer.
• The top part of the stratosphere is the
hottest.
• Airplane fly on this layer.
MESOSPHERE
• Extends from the stratosphere
to approximately 58 miles high.
• Coldest layer of the atmosphere.
(-130 degrees F)
• Meteors burn up
THERMOSPHERE
• Expands 300 miles from mesosphere.
• 5000 degrees F.
• Most of the x-ray and UV radiations
from the sun are absorbed.
EXOSPHERE
• Last layer of the atmosphere.
• Starts from the thermosphere but no
boundaries.
• Temperature varies between night and
day.
• Atoms and molecules scape in the space.
IONOSPHERE
• The layer of the atmosphere that
reflects radio waves.
• Region of earth atmosphere between
stratosphere and the exosphere.
Atmosphere: Interactions with other Earth System components
• it is because the Earth has just the right mass, the right
chemical composition, the right atmosphere, and is the right
distance from the Sun (the "Goldilocks" principle) that permits
water to exist mainly as a liquid.
• even so, most of the water is contained in the oceans and the
high heat capacity of this large volume of water buffers the
Earth surface from large temperature changes
Hydrosphere: Interactions with other Earth System components
mantle
mesosphere solid
Primarily
silica plus
iron and
magnesium
Note: Lithosphere contains both crust and uppermost (brittle) layer of mantle
The dynamic geosphere
Example: A scientist
that studies global
warming is an Earth
System Scientist.
SYSTEM INTERACTIONS
Volcanoes erupt, sending ash
and gases into the air and
sending lava and ash down
onto surrounding forests
and human habitations.
Geosphere
Atmosphere Biosphere
SYSTEM
INTERACTIONS
Hurricanes sweep across the
ocean and onto the land,
damaging the dwellings of
people who live along the
coast.
Hydrosphere
Atmosphere Geosphere
Biosphere
SYSTEM INTERACTIONS
Earthquakes can damage buildings which
may kill people, as well as cause fires which
release gases into the air. Earthquakes in
the ocean may cause a tsunami which can
eventually hit land and kill both animals and
people.
