COORDINATES
Mathematics Grade 8
by : Ria Irawati Sibuea, S.Pd., Gr
Students will be able to :
 name the coordinates of a point
 plot a point on the coordinate plane LEARNING
OUTCOMES
 know the application of coordinate
system

“ When he was a child, he was often
sick. The teachers at his boarding school
let him stay in bed until noon.
One day, Descartes noticed a fly crawling
RENE around on the ceiling. He watched the fly
DESCARTES and wanted to know how to tell someone
(1596-1650) else where the fly was.”

Axis : the reference line from which
distances are measured.

X AND Y AXIS

Note :
• As x increases, the point
moves further right. When
x decreases, the point
moves further to the left.
• As y increases, the point
moves further up. When y
decreases, the point moves

“plot the dot”.
QUADRANTS
The axes of a two-
dimensional Cartesian
System divide the plane into
four infinite regions, called
QUADRANTS, each
bounded by two half-axes.
These are often numbered from 1st to 4th and denoted by
Roman Numerals.
Quadrant I : the sign of (x,y) coordinates are (+,+)
Quadrant II : the sign of (x,y) coordinates are (-,+)
Quadrant III : the sign of (x,y) coordinates are (-,-)
Quadrant IV : the sign of (x,y) coordinates are (+,-)

*They are numbered in a

counterclockwise direction.
EXERCISE

1) Mention all points which

has the same distance
from x-axis.
2) Mention all points which
has the same distance
from y-axis.
3) Mention all points whose
location is on the left-
side of y-axis.
4) Mention all points whose
location is on the right-
side of y-axis.
5) State the location of each
point by its quadrant.
