KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY

KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY

This theory explains the macroscopic and microscopic properties and behaviors of solids,
liquids, and gases. The kinetic molecular theory can be used to explain each of the
experimentally determined gas laws.

POSTULATES Particles are tiny and spread far apart

No attraction or repulsion between particles

KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY

Gas particles are in constant random motion

Collisions are elastic Many gas particles, so statistics applies

Ro b He discovered that doubling the pressure of an enclosed
sample of gas, while keeping its temperature constant,
caused the volume of the gas to be reduced by half. This
phenomenon was proposed in 1662.

He independently discovered the same law in 1679,
states that the volume of a given mass of gas varies
inversely with the pressure when the temperature is
kept constant.

BREATHING
When we inhale, the volume of the lungs increases which in turn decreases the pressure inside the lungs compared
to the outer of the lungs. On the other hand, when we exhale, the volume of the lungs decreases which in turn
increases the pressure inside the lungs compared to the outer of the lungs.
SYRINGE
The pushing of the plunger reduces the volume of fluid in the barrel. This reduction in volume causes a
momentary increase in the pressure of the fluid, which is then injected into the patient's body.
BICYCLE
PUMP
When the handle of a pump is pushed down, the pressure inside the pump will
increase momentarily. In other words, the gas inside is compressed.
BALLOON
Air is blown into the balloon; the pressure of that air pushes on the rubber, making the balloon expand. If one end of
the balloon is squeezed, making the volume smaller, the pressure inside increases, making the un-squeezed part of the
balloon expand out.
A balloon with a volume of 200 mL is filled with a gas at
3 atmospheres. If the pressure is reduced to 0.5
atmospheres without a change in temperature, what
would be the volume of the balloon?
