WHAT IS BOYLE’S LAW?
 Boyle’s law, also called Mariotte’s law,
a relation concerning the compression
 and expansion of a gas at constant
temperature.
 This empirical relation, formulated by the
physicist Robert Boyle in 1662, states
that the pressure (P) of a given quantity
of gas varies inversely with its volume
(V) at constant temperature
ADDITIONAL INFOS
Boyle’s Law is one of the laws in physics that concern the
behavior of gases.
The relationship was also discovered by the French
physicist Edme Mariotte (1676).
The pressure of an ideal gas increases as its container
volume decreases. The higher the pressure, the smaller the
volume.
The law states that the pressure is inversely proportional to
the volume.

Equation
How can we write Boyle’s
Law formula?

Boyle's law is an ideal gas law where at a constant temperature, the volume of an
ideal gas is inversely proportional to its absolute pressure. There are a couple of
ways of expressing the law as an equation. The most basic one states:

PV = k

Where P is pressure (N/m ²), V is volume (dm³ or liters), and k is a constant.

How can we write Boyle’s
Law formula?

The law may also be used to find the pressure or volume of a system when the
temperature is held constant:

P1 V1 = P2 V2

} of the gas
P1 = initial pressure
P2 = final pressure
V1 = initial volume
V2 = final volume

Human
Breathing
Boyle's law may be applied to
explain how people breathe and
exhale air. When the diaphragm
expands and contracts, lung
volume increases and decreases,
changing the air pressure inside of
them. The pressure difference
between the interior of the lungs
and the external air produces either
inhalation or exhalation.
The pressure of the
gas exerting in the
Syringe

Imagine that you hold the tip of

a syringe on the tip of your
finger so no gas can escape.
Then push the plunger down of
the syringe. This results to
decreasing volume and the
pressure increases.

“ “The inspired and expired air may be
sometimes very useful, by condensing
and cooling the blood that passed
through the lungs; I hold that the
depuration of the blood in the passage,

is not only one of the ordinary, but one
of the principal uses of respiration.”
