ANIMAL TISSUE

EPITHELIAL TISSUE

 This type of tissue lines the different

coverings as well as the different body
cavities.
 They may be grouped according to the shape
of cells making them up and the number of
layers they form.
Classification of
Epithelial tissue according
to its shape

•Cuboidal
•Squamous
•columnar
Cuboidal
 The cells have
cubical form
Squamous
 The cells
look like flat,
polygonal
plates.
Columnar
 The cells
have
rectangular
shape.
Epithelial tissue is
categorized further as:
 Simple- cells are arranged in single sheet
Stratified- The cells are
arranged in two or more
sheets.
Pseudo stratified- Cells
appear superimposed over
the others, such that the
sheet of the cell appears
to be composed of more than
one layer.
Connective tissue
 This type of tissue is composed of a
relatively sparse population of cells
surrounded by a non living substance
called matrix and fibrous protein called
collagen.
There are diverse
classifications of
connective tissues:
Dense connective
tissue
 Dense connective tissue
include bones, cartilages,
tendons and ligaments.
Loose connective tissue

It includes adipose

tissue and areolar
tissue.
Blood
 It belongs to a special
classification- it is a fluid
connective tissue
Muscle Tissue

 This type of tissue is specialized for

contraction and movement.
 The ability to contract is due to the elasticity
of the protein called actin or thin filament
and the thick filament called myosin.
Muscle tissue can be
classified based on the
type of contraction
produced and the
arrangement of protein
produced.
Skeletal Muscle
• It is striated.
• It is voluntary.
• It acts as a lever
for the skeleton
which
facilitates
skeletal
movement.
Smooth Muscle
• It exhibits smooth
appearance.
• The arrangement of
protein is more
orderly.
• It produced involuntary
contraction.
• This type of muscle is
present in the outer
wall of the stomach,
esophagus, uterus and
walls of blood vessels.
Cardiac Muscle
• It is found
exclusively in
the heart.
• The
contraction is
involuntary.
Nervous Tissue

• This type of tissue is specialized for the

transmission of impulses or signals to and
from the brain.
• It makes up the brain, spinal cord and other
nerves that arise from the spinal cord.
• Nerve tissue is made up of special cells called
neurons.
• A neuron is enveloped by a protective
membrane called neurilemma.
A neuron is made up of two
process:
• Dendrites are the
process that
bring impulses
toward the
neuron’s cell
body.
• Axon- carries
impulses away
from it.
