Objectives:
- To be able to fully grasp the meaning
of Endocytosis
- Identify the functions of Endocytosis
- To be able to differentiate the 3 types
of Endocytosis
What is
Endocytosis?
• Endocytosis is the procedure by which molecules are
actively transported into the cell by being engulfed by
WHAT IS its membrane.
• All cells use endocytosis to transport substances that
ENDOCYTOSIS? cannot passively cross the membrane.
• Endocytosis has been demonstrated to facilitate cell
migration in developing tissues.
• It requires energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine
Triphosphate), which is utilized to transport the
components inside the cell.
Several Functions
of Endocytosis
• Capturing pathogens or other unknown
• Taking in nutrients for cellular growth,
function and repair substances that may endanger the organism

cells.
Receptor - Mediated
Endocytosis
- A type of endocytosis in which cell surface
receptor proteins are employed to engulf a
particular target molecule. The coated pits of
the plasma membrane are where the
receptors, which are transmembrane
proteins, gather.
Example of
Phagocytosis
Phagocytes include a wide range of white
blood cells, such as mast cells, dendritic
cells, neutrophils, and macrophages.
Because they are responsible for locating
and engulfing germs that are entering the
body, white blood cells are referred to be
"professional" phagocytes
