Importance of Bulk Transport
What is Bulk Transport?

It is used for moving molecules (or large quantities of

smaller molecules) that are too large to be moved by
transport proteins across the cell membrane.
ENDOCYTOSI
S
A process that cells use
to engulf extracellular
materials.
EXOCYTOS
EXOCYTOS
IS
A process that expel
material into the
extracellular space.
ENDOCYTOS
ISPHAGOCYTOSIS
PINOCYTOSIS

RECEPTOR-MEDIATED
ENDOCYTOSIS
PHAGOCYTOSIS

Where phago means “to eat” is used by white blood cells, like
macrophage and neutrophils which patrols the body, engulfing
large particles such as bacteria, cell debris, dead cells or even
intact cells to eat.
PINOCYTOSIS
In which small molecules dissolved in extracellular fluid are
brought into the cell through an invagination of the cell
membrane, resulting in their containment within a small vesicle
inside the cell.
RECEPTOR-MEDIATED
ENDOCYTOSIS
A process in which cell surface receptors ensure specificity of
transport.
EXOCYTOSI
S
CONSTITUTIVE EXOCYTOSIS

REGULATED EXOCYTOSIS
Importance of Bulk Transport
• Allows cells to obtain nutrient from the environment.
• Selectively “grab” certain particles out of the extracellular
fluid.
• Release signaling molecules to communicate with neighbors.
