What do you think about the picture above?

Brainstorming
Most people in the world have a dream for their future. What is a dream?
Dream is a wish to have or be something. Everyone ought to have a dream.
Even a city has a dream to be more futuristic in future. You can see it from
how the city is developed and designed. That includes the technology,
architecture, environment, landscape, urban planning, etc.
How about you? What do you have in mind? What if you’re not sure
whether you have a dream or not? What will you do?
A. Expressing Future Activity
Common ways to talk about
future activities or plans are …

1. Future Tense

We use Future Tense when we:


• decide to do something at the time of speaking
• want to express our opinion about the futures
Examples:
a. I think we will go right now.
(I just decided this right now)
b. I will call you later.

Future Activity
The expression to be going to means that the
action is planned but not arranged.
Examples:
a. I am going to the theatre
b. ‘Garry called when you were out.’ ‘Yes I
know.’ ‘I am going to phone him later.’
3. Present Continuous Tense

When we say ‘I am meeting my friend


tomorrow’ it means that we have already
decided to meet tomorrow and arranged it.
Example:

4. Future Continuous Tense

• Future Continuous Tense is used to talk


about an action that will already have started
and will still be happening by a certain time
in the future.
• We use time expressions such as for 30
minutes and since early morning to describe
the length of time the activity has already
gone.
• To form a sentence in the future perfect
progressive use will + have + been verb -
ing (present participle) form of the verb.
Examples:
a. By the time you get here, we will have
been remodeling the house for a month.
b. By 2018, my father will have been
teaching for more than 30 years.
5. Future Perfect Tense

• Future Perfect Tense is used to explain an


activity that will be completed by a certain time
in the future.
• We add time expressions such as by the
time, by then, by the year 2020, by March
25th to describe these kinds of activities.
• To form the future perfect simple, use will
have + V3 (past participle) form of the
verb.
Example:
a. By the end of this weekend, I will
have completed my lessons.

B. Paired Conjunction

Paired conjunctions connect two


balanced clauses, phrases or words.
They come in pairs. You have to use
both of them in different places in a
sentence.

For instance:
both … and; neither ... nor; not only ...
but also ....
These conjunctions connect two
balanced clauses, phrases, or words.

Here are a few example sentences
containing pair conjunctions:

1. both . . . and
 Both football and badminton are popular in
Indonesia.
 Both English and Chinese are learned in our
school.

2. not only . . . but also


 He is not only a professional footballer,
but also a successful businessman.

4. neither . . . nor

7. no sooner . . . than
 No sooner had I finished washing my car
than it started raining.

Expressing future activities or events can be


conducted by using:
• Future tense To be going to
• Present Continuous Tense
• Future Continuous Tense
• Future Perfect Tense

B. Paired Conjunction

Paired conjunction used to link two ideas that


are considered similar. It always comes between
the words or clauses that join them. Some of
paired conjunctions you have learned are:
both ... and ...; either ... or ...; neither ... nor ...;
not only ... but also ....
