Non-Assertive Behavior
• Non-assertion is failing to stand up for oneself,
or standing up for oneself in such an
ineffectual manner that one's rights are easily
violated.
• It is sometimes called passive behavior.
Definition
• Non assertive behavior is that type of
interpersonal behavior which enables the
person’s right to be violated by another. This
can occur in two ways:
They fail to assert themselves when another
person deliberately attempts to infringe upon
their rights.
The other person does not want to encroach upon
their rights, but their failure to express the need of
feelings results in an inadvertent violation.
Characteristics of the nonassertive
behavior:
• Hides true feelings and inhibit actions that
would reflect their feelings.
• Often feeling hurt.
• Rarely achieves goals.
• Difficulty giving and receiving compliments.
• Averse problem
• Allow manipulation by others
Characteristics of the nonassertive behavior:
• Give up rights
• Hopes goal will be accomplished
• Lets other choose activities
• Lack of confidence
• Develops a pattern of self denial
• Feels inadequate to express thoughts and
feelings
• Unable to achieve goals

inhibited.
