What is VOLLEYBALL?

VOLLEYBALL is a sport played by


two teams with six (6) players each on a playing court
divided by a net.
The object of the game is to send the ball over the
net in order to ground it on the opponent’s court and to
prevent the same effort by the opponent.

William J. Morgan of YMCA
(Young Men’s Christian Association), Holyoke
Massachusetts ORIGINATED the sport with name of
“Mintonette”. Making use of the bladder of a
basketball and a net of lawn tennis.
The ball is volleyed back and forth over the net.

1895

Alfred F. Halstead of YMCA
(Young Men’s Christian Association),
Springfield Massachusetts CHANGE the name of
“Mintonette”to “Volleyball” just for the volleying action
of the player and it remains until now. J.Y. Cameron of
the USA published the first rules of the game.

Canada
becomes the first foreign country to adopt volleyball.

1900

Mr. Elwood S. Brown introduced volleyball in the
philippines
in

First official volleyball championships of the YMCA in
USA and Canada.

1922

First official rules for volleyball published in USSR
(Union of Soviet Socialist Republics).

1925

First book in volleyball published Tscherkassy
(Cherkasy) in USSR. Far Eastern Game using the 9-
man system.

1927

Fédération Internationale de Volleyball/International Volleyball
Federation (FIVB) was founded as governing body of volleyball and
Paul Liband from France becomes the First President And the current
President in FIVB is
Ary Graça of Brazil.

1947

International demonstration tournament on occasion of 53rd
session of International Olympic Committee (IOC)
arranged in Sofia, Bulgaria.

1957

Japan introduces the 6-man volleyball system.

1958
Physical Education & Health: VOLLEYBALL
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes
volleyball as Olympic Women’s Sport.

1962

For the first time, an official FIVB match statistical
system used to supply the mass media and teams with
data on the players and teams performances and to
discover the best players and teams for each skills.
