Translation Quality Assesment (TQA)

TQA is a type of evaluation which mean to determine the value of the end product of a
translation. It focuses on the relation between the Source Text (ST) translated into
Target Text (TT). The error were identified, classified and the frequency of their
occurrences was computed.

2
How to determine the value of translation?

The answer is hard to determine. Why?

◦ It depends on the purpose
◦ It is subjective
◦ The results often ambiguous

3
Some Examples

◦ ST: He cuts the head of enemy with his sword.

TT: Dia membunuh musuhnya dengan pedang.
The element of the source text ‘cut the head’ is changed into membunuh
to make it acceptable for the target reader when adapting text for the
children.
◦ ST: He reads a book.
TT: Dia membaca sebuah buku.
The source text can be translated literally because it is equivalent with the
target text.

4
Wrong Examples

◦ ST: “What a terrible voice!” he said. “Do you know who she is?” TT: “Ya
ampun, suaranya sangat cempreng! Ujar tamu itu sambil menyikut si pria.
“Kamu kenal dia?”
This one is unacceptable because the TT changed the whole meaning.
◦ ST: A woman was singing TT: Di
sebuah pub, seorang penyanyi pendatang baru sedang menghibur
pengunjung dengan suaranya
This text doesn’t contain error, however there are spme adding description
in the text.
