VERIFYING THAT A

RELATION IS A
FUNCTION
RECALL:

 A function is a special type of relation in

which for every first element x in the domain,
there is exactly one second element y in the
range.
 A set of ordered pairs is a function if no two
ordered pairs have the same abscissas, or
 A function is a relation when there is no
repetition of the first coordinate.
TIPS:
• No first coordinates are repeated. (Set of Ordered Pair
& Table of Values)
• The relation shows one-to-one or many-to-one
correspondence. (Mapping Diagram)
• The graph is intersected only at one point if vertical
lines are drawn anywhere. (Graph)
• There is only one value of y for every value of x. (Rule)
EXAMPLE: TABLE OF VALUES

The relation between time and pay is an example of a function.

Notice that there is no repeated value for the first coordinate. So, this is a function.

EXAMPLE: RULE/EQUATION

D. Rule/Equation
Question: What will be your pay if you worked for 1 hour? 15 hours? 20 hours? x hours?

Solution:
Since the value of y is 200 when x is 2, then if x is 1, y should be 100.

The same with,

if x=15, then y=1500,
if x=20, then y=2000.

So, the rule for this function is 𝑦 = 100𝑥.

As the number of time (x) increases, the amount of pay (y) also increases, and for every one value of x, there is exactly one value for y.
PROPERTY:
VERTICAL
LINE TEST If every vertical line
intersects the graph for no
more than once, then the
graph represents a function.

(VERTICAL LINE TEST)
• DIRECTION: Determine whether each set of ordered pairs is a
function or not. Plot and connect each set of points on the Cartesian
plane.

PROPERTY:
RULE or
EQUATION If y can be expressed in terms of x,
and there is only one value of y for
one value of x, then a given rule or
equation is a function.
STEPS:
STEP 1:
Rewrite first the rule in such a way that only is at the
left of the equal sign.
STEP 2:

Assign values for x, and substitute them to the rule or

equation and find the value of y.
