Stress
Force and moment at any point on the sectioned area represent the
resultant effect of the actual distribution of loading over the sectioned
area.
In mechanics of materials, we find out the
actual distribution.
Stress
Cross sectional area is divided into small areas such as ΔA.
Assumptions: i) Material is continuous ii) Material is cohesive
