Introduction

A drilling machine is a machine fitted with a cutting tool attachment or driving

tool attachment, usually a drill bit or a driver bit, used for boring holes in various
materials. Its main function is to drill holes in the variety of metals, wood,

Teflon and concrete walls. There are many other functions that drilling machines
are capable of performing. This functions include tapping, spot facing, reaming,
countersinking and counterboring. Drill machines are found in different types,
sizes and shapes but share the same function.
Objectives

The objectives of this lesson are to:

 Discuss the safety operating standards of drilling machines;

 Identify different types of the drilling machines and their
components; and
 describe the operation of the drilling machines.
Safety operating standards of a drilling
machines
 Carry out risk assessment before commencing with operation.
 Do not support the workpieces by hand. Use the holding device (vice) to prevent the workpiece
from being torn from the operator’s hand.
 Never make any adjustments while the machine is in motion.
 Never clean or remove away chips with your hand. Use a brush.
 Do not wear loose clothes when working on turning drill machine.
 Never place tools or equipment on the drilling table.
 Keep all guards in place while operating.
 Remove all chuck keys and wrenches before operating.
 Do not use a mobile phone while drilling.
 Know where the emergency stop buttons are positioned.
 Always wear your eye protection(Safety goggles) when drilling.
 Keep hands away from the moving/ rotating machinery.
 Report any damage on drill machines/ equipment as this could cause harm to people or
accidents.
 Keep the machines in a good safety state at all times (Do housekeeping after every duty )

Components of a Redial drilling Machine

 Base- Support the column and stabilize it. It can also be used for clamping
heavier work.
 Table- Clamps or holds the working material in place.
 Vertical Column- support the arm carrying the spindle head, can be swiveled
around it.
 Spindle- holds the drill chuck and is responsible for rotation.
 Feed levers- it drill feed into the workpiece.
 Spindle motor- provide power or engage the spindle

Pillar drilling machine

Pillar drilling machine are floor mounted heavily constructed drilling machines.
They are driven by a powerful electric motor and the spindle speed is varied by a
gearbox. Pillar drills are full machines that features a sliding column that is
operated by a rotating feed handle. A pillar drilling machines rack and pinion or
drill chuck can take up to 50mm diameter drills. Drill chucks as well as drill bits
can be inserted directly into the spindle. The machine table can be swung around
the column and can also rotate around it’s own axis (360 degrees). Because of
these combined movements any point can be brought under the drill bit on the
table.
Radial drilling machine

Radial drilling machines are heavy duty drilling machines, fitted with the cutting tool or

a drill bit used for drilling holes on different material. The construction of the radial

machine is such that the arm carrying the spindle head can be swiveled around the

vertical column. The head that carries the spindle can be located at any point along the

arm rotating in the horizontal pane. The arm together with the spindle head can be

raised or lowered on the column and than clamped tightly in position. The work that is

performed on the machine is usually large and heavy so it is easier to swing the arm of

the radial drilling machine and bring the drill in position over the work than to move

the work on the table. The flexibility of the machine include manual feed, conventional

power feed on the spindle, power driven arm, a rapid traverse control to quickly

reposition the arm, a table which clamps to the base.

Conclusion

A drilling machine is an important tool that is used in manufacturing and

construction Industries. It can be used to perform different tasks but it is
primarily used to drill holes on metals, wood, plastics(Teflon) and concrete walls.
Safety operating standards should be adhered to, to guide and prevent the
operator from unforeseen accidents. Drilling machines must be maintained to
prolong the lifespan of the machine ( Proper housekeeping must be done).
