- The amount of heat 𝛿Q necessary to raise the temperature of a sample of the substance is
propotional to the temperature change dT and the mass of the sample m:
𝛿Q = mcdT = CdT (3.2-1)
where C is the heat capacity of the substance.
- The heat capacity C of a particular sample is defined as the amount of heat needed to raise the
temperature of that sample by 1°C.
§4. NHIỆT
1. Nhiệt và nhiệt dung
- Nhiệt: Năng lượng ddowcj truyền giữa hai hệ (hoặc giữa hệ
và môi trường xung quanh) do sự chênh lệch nhiệt độ giữa 5C 30C 40C
Heat No heat Heat
𝛿Q = mcdT = CdT (3.2-1)
§4. HEAT
1. Heat and heat capacity
- The specific heat capacity (the specific heat) c of a substance is the heat capacity per unit mass
of this substance.
c = C/m (3.2-2)
- The molar specific heat c’ of a substance is the heat capacity per 1 mole of this substance.
c' = C/n = mc/n = Mc (3.2-3)
- Therefore:
𝛿Q = CdT = mcdT = nc’dT (3.2-4)
- The historical unit of heat, the calore (cal), was originally defined to be the amount of heat
necessary to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1C.
- The unit of heat capacity C is cal/K. The unit of specific heat c is cal/g.K. The unit of molar
specific heat c’ is cal/mol.K.
For water, c = 1 (cal/g.K); c’ = 18 (cal/mol.K).
§4. NHIỆT
c = C/m (3.2-2)
c' = C/n = mc/n = Mc (3.2-3)
- Do đó:
𝛿Q = CdT = mcdT = nc’dT (3.2-4)
mol c’ is cal/mol.K.
Đối với nước, c = 1 (cal/g.K); c’ = 18 (cal/mol.K).
§4. HEAT
1. Heat and heat capacity
- Mechanical equivalence of heat: Taking experiments as shown in the above figure, Joule found
that it takes about 4.184 J of mechanical energy to raise the temperature of 1 g of water by 1C.
This means that 4.184 J of mechanical energy is exactly equivalent to 1 cal of heat.
1 cal = 4.184 J (3.2-5)
§4. HEAT
1. Heat and heat capacity
1 cal = 4.184 J (3.2-5)
§4. HEAT
1. Heat and heat capacity
Container
- Calorimetry: is a technique for measuring specific heat of an
object. It involves:
+ Heating the object to some known temperature.
+ Placing it in a vessel containing water of known mass and
temperature.
+ Measuring the temperature of the water after equilibrium has
been reached.
1. Internal energy
- The internal energy of an object is all the energy within the object that is associated with its
microscopic components – molecules - when viewed from the center-of-mass reference frame
of the object.
- The internal energy includes kinetic energy of random translational, rotational and vibrational
motions of molecules; potential energy associated with forces between molecules.
- The internal energy is a function of state. That means the internal energy is determined by P, V
and T. In going from one state to another, the change in the internal energy is rout-
independent.
- Because the kinetic energy is a function of temperature T and the potential energy is a function
of volume V, the internal energy Eint is a function of T and V:
Eint = Eint (T, V) (3.3-1)
§5. INTERNAL ENERGY
2. Internal energy of an ideal gas
- Gas molecules do not exert forces on each other except when they collide The potential
energies associated with forces between the molecules are negligible.
The change in the internal energy of the system equals the heat
transfer into the system plus the work done on the system.
2. The first law of thermodynamics
Formal sign convention:
- The heat is transferred into the system: Q > 0; The heat is transferred out of the system: Q < 0.
- Work done on the system: W > 0; Work done by the system: W < 0
Qin > 0
Won > 0 Won < 0 Qin < 0
dEint = 𝛿Q + 𝛿W (3.4-4)
where dEint is differential of the internal-energy function,
𝛿Q represents a small amount of heat transfer into or out of the system,
𝛿W represents a small amount work done on or by the system.
§8. HEAT CAPACITIES OF GASES
1. Heat capacity at constant volume
If heat is obsorbed by a gas at constant volume, no work is done. Therefore, the amount of
heat transfer into the gas equals the internal energy of the gas.
Let Qv and Cv to be the amount of heat transfer into the gas and the heat capacity in an
isometrical process of a gas.
Qv = CvT
According to the first law of thermaldynamics, we have: Eint = Qv + W = CvT
(3.5-1)
Taking the limit as T 0, we have :
(3.5-2)
The heat capacity at constant volume is the rate of change of the internal
energy with temperature.
§8. HEAT CAPACITIES OF GASES
2. Heat capacity at constant pressure
Let Cp to be the heat capacity of a gas in an isobaric process. The amount of heat transfer into
the gas in this process:
QP = CpT
According to the first law of thermodynamics: Eint = QP + Won = QP - PV = CpT - PV
CpT = Eint + PV
For infinitesimal changes, we have:
CpdT = dEint + PdV
Using Eq. (3.5-2), we have: CpdT = CvdT + PdV
For an ideal gas, PV = nRT, we have: PdV + VdP = nRdT
In an isobaric process, dP = 0 PdV = nRdT
CpdT = CvdT + nRdT = (Cv + nR)dT
§8. HEAT CAPACITIES OF GASES
2. Heat capacity at constant pressure
Because the internal energy of a system of N gas molecules is determined by:
Eint = NkT = nRT
then, the heat capacities:
Cv = nR (3.5-4)
Cp = nR (3.5-5)
3. Molar heat capacity
- Molar heat capacity at constant volume:
c’v = Cv/n = R (3.5-
6)
- Molar heat capacity at constant pressure:
c’p =Cp/n = + R = R (3.5-7)
§8. HEAT CAPACITIES OF GASES
W = (3.6-1) W
During an quasi-static isometrical process, the heat transfer into the gas is just to change
the internal energy of gas and, therefore, the gas temperature changes.
§9. APPLICATIONS OF THE FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS
During a quasi-static isothermal process, any energy that enters the gas by heat is transferred
out of the gas by work, and, as a result, no change in the internal energy of the gas occurs.

§9. APPLICATIONS OF THE FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS
5. Polytropic process
- A polytropic process is a thermodynamic process in which the heat capacity of gas is constant.
Let dQa and dWa to be heat transfer into the gas and work done on the gas during an
infinitesimal change of the gas in a polytropic process.
- The change of internal energy of the gas in this infinitesimal change:
dEint = 𝛿Qa + 𝛿Wa
