Exam Rules
 The exam is Online (accessible via blackboard) and Open Book.
 The exam is multiple choice:
 Some of the questions have 1 correct answer.
 Some of the questions have more than 1 correct answer (this is highlighted in bold and underlined).
 You might need to choose either the correct answer (for some questions) or the incorrect answer for others (this
is highlighted in bold and underlined).
 Other questions might involve some calculations and the numerical answers are given in multiple choices (the
answer might be amongst the choice, or the “no valid answer” could be the correct answer!).
 The exam has 24 questions (all multiple choice).
 The duration of the exam is 2 hours (no extra time is given unless justified).
 You do not need to upload anything by the end of this exam.
 This exam allows backtracking (which means that if you move to the next question,
you can go back to change your previous answers).
 The answers are randomised.
Example 1
 Based on your understanding of rolling operations, which sentence is
correct:
a. The rolling operation does not affect the grains.
b. The rolling operation decreases the strength of the rolled component.
c. The rolling operation makes the grains elongated in the parallel direction relative to rolling direction.
d. The rolling operation makes the grains elongated in the transverse direction relative to rolling direction.
e. There is no valid answer.
Solution - Example 1
 Based on your understanding of rolling operations, which sentence is
correct:
Correct answer

Note: The above answer is based on your

understanding of the illustration given here which is
available in the lecture notes - You will not be given
this illustration in the exam as I assume that you will
have studied and understood the above based on the
lecture notes.
Example 2
 Based on your understanding of steel alloys, which two sentences are
correct:
a. The steel is made by mixing carbon with iron in addition to other residual elements.
b. The martensite phase in steel is very soft and ductile.
c. The ferrite and pearlite in steel are harder than martensite.
d. The addition of carbon increases the hardness of all phases in steel.
e. There is no valid answer.
Solution - Example 2
 Based on your understanding of steel alloys, which two sentences are
correct:
a. The steel is made by mixing carbon with iron in addition to other residual elements.
b. The martensite phase in steel is very soft and ductile. Correct
answers
c. The ferrite and pearlite in steel are harder than martensite.
d. The addition of carbon increases the hardness of all phases in steel. Partial marks: If you answer both, then that is
2 marks. If you answer 1, you will get 1 mark
e. There is no valid answer.

Note: The above answer is based on your

understanding of the illustration given here and the
phase diagram of steel which are all available in the
lecture notes - You will not be given these illustrations
in the exam as I assume that you will have studied and
understood the above based on the lecture notes.
Example 3
 Based on the following phase diagram of Ta and W, for the 50% W alloy, at
3200oC, the amount of liquid and solid are:
a. 54% Solid and 46% Liquid.
b. 54% Liquid and 46% Solid.
c. 54% Solid and 36% Liquid.
d. 34% Liquid and 56% Solid.
e. There is no valid answer.

3200oC, the amount of liquid and solid are:
a. 54% Solid and 46% Liquid.
b. 54% Liquid and 46% Solid.
c. 54% Solid and 36% Liquid. Correct answer

d. 34% Liquid and 56% Solid.

e. There is no valid answer.

* Hint: use the lever rule.

** Hint: The summation of % S + % L = 100%. So, liquid should be 46%.

Example 4
 Based on the following phase diagram of Ta and W, for the 50% W alloy, at
3200oC, the amount of W and Ta in the liquid phase is:
a. 36% Ta and 64% W.
b. 36% W and 54% Ta.
c. 36% W and 64% Ta.
d. 36% Ta and 54% W.
e. There is no valid answer.

b. 36% W and 54% Ta. Correct answer

c. 36% W and 64% Ta.

d. 36% Ta and 54% W.
e. There is no valid answer.
