Reflective Writing nº1

The school I am attending right now is fairly different from the one where I did my VISE I
in many aspects. I think one of the most important issues is the infrastructure. The school
building is rather big and every grade has a room for themselves, which I find really
important. Because in the school I was before, 7º and 8º grade and some others grades,
were sharing rooms which made almost impossible to teach them the corresponding units
of the subject they were seeing. Although they have bigger rooms that my previous school,
the amount of student per room is quite big. This makes difficult the learning process1 and
it eliminates the advantage that the infrastructure gave the school. The students are
obviously affected because the teaching becomes too general and shallow; therefore there is
not enough time to pay attention to every child in the classroom.
The environment is something beneficial to the learning and teaching process, because it
has been proved that children with problems at school or at home, are not able to perform
well in tests. So up until now what I have seen at this school is a pretty good environment,
in which the kids are able to express themselves at their best and the treatment they receive
from their teachers is good. But it could be better, because we can still find the kind of
teacher that yells all the time and forgot that “To teach is to learn twice.”2

I really do not know what we can do about the amount of students we have in one
classroom that would be probably something to deal with the government and the Ministry
of Education. But there is something truly important and that is the teachers approach to the
students and as this quote says “Don't try to fix the students, fix ourselves first. The good
teacher makes the poor student good and the good student superior. When our students fail,
we, as teachers, too, have failed.”3. First of all teachers should fix themselves first in order
to help their students to improve their performance at school.
