PLACE AND PERSONAL NAMES IN KOSOVO AND METOHIA
IN MEDIEVAL TIMES
Summary
The historical sources from the period of the Serbian medieval state, and also
Turkish sources from the fifteenth century, testify to the fact that the personal names
and place names in Kosovo are mostly of Serbian origin, taken from a generally
Slavic background.
This is, therefore, further testimony to the fact that the region was inhabited
from ancient times by the Serb population. The lengthiest charters, containing thousands of pertinent facts, are King Milutins Banjska Charter, Stefans Deani Charter, and the Prizren Charter of Tsar Duan which founded the Monastery of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel at Prizren.
After the Battle of Kosovo, few documents were produced in Cyrillic which
speak of the personal and place names in Kosovo and Metohia. In the fifteenth century the Turks ruled over the Serbian regions. The Turks took careful censuses in the
territories they conquered so that they could have reliable data about subjects who
paid taxes to them. One of the important censuses was the one in the region of Vuk
Brankovi that included Kosovo and part of Metohia. The Turkish sources testify to
the fact that the Serbian populace was numerous in those regions, and that the place
names from the time of the Serbian medieval state had not been changed.
Key words: anthroponimy, toponymy, charter, medieval Serbia, Kosovo and
Metohia, Stefan Nemanja, Stefan the First-Crowned, Stefan Deanski, King Milutin,
Tsar Duan, Turkish defters, the Brankovi lands.
