CHAPTER I : PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Project
Lipa City is one of the 1st class city of the
province of Batangas, a city well-known to it”s famous
“Kapeng Barako” back then. It was during the 1940’s
when a mexican friar bring the kapeng barako
seedling in lipa. It covers almost 2/3 of the town. Lipa
became the worl center for coffee trade until the
bagombong, an insect that wiped out coffee the
coffee plantation. After the world war II Americans
introduced the instant coffee, it creates a huge effect
in the production of coffee bean in lipa, the rich
shifted to instant coffee and the poor was stucked to
the traditional coffee. So by then the liberica coffee or
kapeng barako became rare. By that time the barako
bean was on the brink of extinction until the owner of
Figaro Coffee Philippines started their campaign in
planting liberica coffee.
Nowadays the industry of Kapeng barako
was still at risk, coffee farmers loss their chance of
reviving the glory of Liberica coffee even the youth is
neglecting the kapeng barako and drinking instant
coffee instead without knowing that liberica coffee
was once a treasure of Lipa Batangas. The demand
of instant coffee is very high that the philippines
sometimes need to import coffee from other country
this demand is pushing the coffee farmers to plant
arabica beans which is used in instant coffee.
The Big Bean is an urban center and coffee
plantation with an advocacy of restoring the glory of
Kapeng Barako industry in the Philippines specially in
Lipa City Batangas. A place for all coffee enthusiast
were they will not just enjoy the strong and bold
coffee taste of Kapeng Barako but also they can be
part of the restoration advocacy. The Big Bean also
have a nursery for the kapeng barako plant and the
guest and tourist can experience a tree planting
activity on the coffee plantation area.
Project Objectives
 To develop an urban center with coffee
plantation to help in the restoration of
kapeng barako industry.
 To help in taking away the Barako beans
into the brink of extinction.
The guest and tourist will not just enjoy the
unique taste of Kapeng Barako but they will also be
aware of it’s great glory back in the history of Lipa
City and the Importance of kapeng barako to all the
coffee farmers of the Philippines specially in Lipa City
Batangas.
The Client
Figaro Coffee Philippines started as a non-
profit organization of seven friends who wanted to
share their passion for brewing, tasting, and
experementing with many varieties of coffee. Their
hobby turned into a business and now the firm
currently ranks as the No.1 Filipino coffee company to
date with it’s primary aim to help local coffee farmers
in the country by engaging them in contract farming
and introducing organic coffee farming. The company
aslo aim to boost Filipino coffee industry by working
closely with the local farmers and by reviving the
production of the Barako bean.
Project Scope and Limitations
The research covers the preparation for
designing a coffee center and plantation that will
contribute to the Kapeng Barako industry. The
researcher also include the different products that are
made of Barako beans and the process of taking care
of Barako beans from the nurseries up to the coffee
plantation. The supply of Liberica coffee beans during
the early stage of the project is also included in the
research.

CHAPTER II: SITE JUSTIFICATION

Site Selection Criteria

Every projects needs a suitable site to THE SITE

considered a successful project. The presence of
near utility services is one the most important. A
potable water supply is needed for every project
because it will be used from the construction phase
up to the turnover to the owner same with the power
supply. An easy access to the main road is also
significant The type of soil and proper zoning of the
chosen site is also important it should be appropriate Regional map of CALABARZON
to the proposed project to be constructed.

proper zoning of commercial agricultural to meet the
standards of local government unit. The chosen site
must be appropriate to Kapeng Barako plant in order
to grow properly. As much as possible the site must
be located in the city for an easy access of the tourist
and guest. The site must be also accessible to a main
road going to a transportation terminal for the tourist
accessibility and convenience.

Environs.
The chosen site is located at Brgy. Sabang
Lipa City along Heneral Luna st. with neighboring
commercial and residential area. The site is near Sm
City Lipa and Lipa City Hall. The land-use of the
chosen site is commercial agricultural lot which is
applicable to the proposed urban centre with coffee
plantation.

Coffee farm House: Alfonso Cavite
Coffee farm house is a farm and garden intended for
relaxation and stress getaway outside of Metro
Manila. They have accomodations for overnight stay.
The amazing part of this farm house is the “Coffee
Talk” whrein there is an audio visual room intended
for the trivia and history of coffee beans it is located
near the coffee trees planted inside the farm house so
the guess will not just taking pictures to the coffee
trees but also picked coffee knowledge especially
coffee lovers.
The integration of audiovisual room is
significant to the project proposal because of the
advocacy of The Big Bean which is to promote and
restore the Kapeng Barako industry in the Philippines.
The Coffee Farm House
Science and Technology-based Farm on Coffee
Production : Brgy. Minatok east, Amadeo Cavite
The 2.7 hectare farm project called the
Science and Technology-based Farm on Coffee
Production is headed by the farmer scientist Teodoro
dela Cruz. He tours travelers around his farm and
introduced them to many coffee planting techniques
such as multiple cropping, multiple stem pruning, and
fertilizer application.
This related literature is significant to the
research because of its advocacy to encourage not
just coffee lovers but also coffee farmers to plant
more coffee tree and share the technology that is
developed from its technology-based farm. This will
help in the restoration of coffee industry specially in
places were the coffee bean production decreased.
Recycled coffee grounds could make roads
smoother and greener.

Design Concept

Modern architecture will be the design

Engineers have turned coffee grounds into building
materials for roads. The global coffee industry
produces millions of tonnes of used grounds anually
with most ending up in landfill. But Arul Arulrajah at
Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne,
Australia believes that this materials shoud not go to
waste.
concept of the proposed coffee center and plantation
as it will adapt the new building technologies to make
the users comfortable and the building to be an eco-
friendly building because environmental protection is
a must nowadays due to the continous climate
change. The materials to be used be locally found in
the Philippines and some are from recycled waste like
used coffee grounds for road construction.

Arul Arulrajah and his collegues collected

soggy coffee grounds from bins of a local cafe and
dried them in a 50 degree celcius oven. They mixed
seven parts of coffee grounds with three parts of a
waste product from steel manufacturing called slag
and added an alkaline solution to bind everything
together. They compressed the final mixture into
cylindrical blocks which were strong enough for use
as a layer of road that sits under the surface and
provides foundation.

This integration of used coffee grounds to

construction materials is significant to the research
because it may help not just in the construction
process but also in reduction of used coffee grounds
to be sent to land fill.
