There are numerous physical effects of stress. Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, make the heart
miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure. Stress can affect the respiratory system. It can lead to asthma. It can
cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide. Stress can affect your digest system
by giving you constant stomachaches and problems digesting food.
Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks.
They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For example, a
normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make
people angry, moody, or nervous. The feeling of having to handle everything with headaches that goes on and on.
Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental illnesses. Depression, an extreme feeling of sadness and
hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress. Alcoholism and other addictions often develop as a
result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress. Eating disorders, such as anorexia, are sometimes caused by
stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is put at risk.
It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body. It affects the emotions. Untreated, it may eventually
result in mental illness. Stress has a great influence on the health and well-being of our bodies, our feelings, and our
minds. So, reduce stress: stop the world and rest for a while.

Dear Diary:
July 14: I’ve been here about a month. It’s harder than I thought. First of all, it’s very hot
and humid. There’s no air conditioning. I have less energy and I sleep all the time. Today I
had to climb up the hill but I couldn’t. I’m too exhausted. This is not good for me.
August 1: I try to communicate with the people here and there’s a language barrier. I can’t
speak Portuguese well and neither do they. They try to say some words that I don’t
understand. Sometimes I think I need to get out of here and return to Canada.
September 18: Yesterday I went to the movies with some friends. I could actually
understand some of it! Everyone here has been very patient with me and my poor
language skills. Now I can tell that we have some much in common. Back in Canada, we
celebrate the coming of a new family member and here they do, too. I feel so happy.
December 31: Tomorrow is New Year’s Day and I’m thinking to go across the beach and
jump into it as a new way of receiving the year. I don’t have another idea and neither do
my friends. Now I have to drive along the road to buy some grapes and wine. Kind of busy
here!
February 17: I feel so homesick. I miss my family. Thankfully tomorrow I go home! I want
to hug my friend so bad!
February 20: Well, I’m at home. I’m so excited and so are my friends. I have so much to tell
and guess what? They do, too. I missed a lot! Now I just want to be near them and feel
loved.
April 20: I’m starting a new job tomorrow and I’m very excited about it. So does my father.
He is so happy for me. I’m back into my exercise routine and feeling pretty good. I’m
already planning my next trip ….
2. Read the journal entries again. Match each item Samuel struggled with to a date in the journal.
Write the date.
