CALCULATION OF ELECTRICAL CABLES

The following calculation is to determinate the size of the cables from the ship supply connection
(MSB) to the Diving system connection inlet.

Supply the diving SUSI system.

Calculations for voltage feeders to 440 volts are performed by:

a) Maximum current carrying capacity of electrical cable.

b) Maximum allowable voltage drop.

a) Maximum current carrying capacity of electrical cable.

Power (VA) = 237270 VA

Voltage (Volts) = 440 V
Frequency (Hz) = 60 Hz
Power factor = 0.9

𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟
𝑙𝑛 =
√3 (𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒)

237270
𝑙𝑛 = = 311.70 Amp
√3 (440)

Connected current to the work area.

Ic= Current corrected
In= Nominal current
FCA= Correction factor for bunching= 1.00 (Lloyd´s Rules, Section 6, Chapter 2, Section 11.7.2)
FCF= Correction factor for ambient temperature= 0.94 (Lloyd´s Rules, Section 6, Chapter 2, Table 2.11.5)

𝐼𝑛 311.70
𝐼𝑐 = = = 331.6 𝐴𝑚𝑝
(𝐹𝐶𝐴 ∗ 𝐹𝐶𝐹) (1.00 ∗ 0.94)

According to the current (Ic) and the tables for insulated rated voltages 1Kv and 3Kv, 90°C. No more than
three electrical cables in conduit or directly grounded. (Lloyd´s Rules, Section 6, Chapter 2, Table 2.11.1
and Lloyd´s Rules, Section 6, Chapter 2, Table 2.11.3), a electrical cable of 120mm2 which has a current
rating of 339 Amperes is selected.
b) Maximun allowable voltage drop.

Data:
Supply voltage (V) = 440Volts
Feeder length (m) = 60m
Rated Current In (A) = 331.6Amp
Allowable voltage feeder drop = 6%
Allowable voltage feeder drop = 26.4Volts
Power factor of the load (cos Ø) = 0.9

Calculating the voltage drop across the selected wire:

𝑒𝑅 = 𝑒𝑠 + 𝐼𝑅𝑐𝑜𝑠 Ø + 𝐼𝑋𝑠𝑖𝑛Ø − √𝑒𝑠2 − (𝐼𝑋𝑐𝑜𝑠Ø − IRsinØ)2

Where:
R= resistance of the electrical cable in Ω/km = 0.17Ω/km =0.0028Ω
XL= inductive reactance of the electrical cable in Ω/km = 0.135 Ω/km = 0.0027 Ω
Cos Ø = 0.9
Sin Ø = 0.6

𝑒𝑅 = 440 + (331.6)(0.0028)(0.9) + (331.6)(0.0027)(0.6) −

2
√4402 − ((331.6)(0.0028)(0.9) − (331.6)(0.0027)(0.6)) =

Then:

eR=1.38v
%V = 1.73(1.38/440)(100)
%V = 0.54

With this, we confirm that the electrical cable size selected is adequate.
Since the electrical cables are installed in trays appropriately located on deck to MSB, we propouse insulated
electrical cables croos-linked polyethylene (XLPE).

Selection of protection

Overload.
To calculate the overload device will consider the 1.25% for a potential overload, even taking into account the loads
are static device protects the electronic charges are not dynamic, typically those that are overloaded by problems
mechanical.

I (breaker) = 125% In
I (breaker) = 1.25 x 331.7
I (breaker) = 414.625Amp There is a breaker of 630Amp on MSB, can be adjusted to set point to 400Amp
