At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. Identify the quartiles of ungrouped data.
b. Solve quartiles of ungrouped data using Mendenhall and Sincich Method
c. Show appreciation in solving quartiles of ungrouped data

II. SUBJECT MATTER

TOPIC: Measures of Position for Ungrouped Data
SUBTOPIC: The Quartile for Ungrouped Data
REFERENCE: Grade 10 Mathematics Learner’s Module page 364-372
MATERIALS: Manila Paper, Projector, Board and Marker

III. PROCEDURES

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

DAILY ROUTINE
a. Prayer
“Stand up and let us pray.” (Everybody stand up and pray)

b. Greetings
“Good Morning class.” “Good Morning Ma’am.”
“Okay! Take your seats.” “Thank you Ma’am.”

c. Checking of Attendance
“Class monitor, who’s absent (the class monitor will give the name of
today?” absent)

d. Review of the past lesson

“What was our topic last meeting?” “Ma’am, last meeting we tackled about
Conditional Probability.”
“That’s right! And now we will
proceed to our next topic.”

A. ACTIVITY

a. Priming Activity
“Before we go to our next lesson, we will
have an activity first.”

“Go to your group mates, I’ll give you

surnames and fall in line using the logic
problem.”

 Seven students are standing in line.

Laurel is not the last. Roxas is ahead Answer:
of Quirino. Aguinaldo and then Aguinaldo, Quezon, Laurel, Osmeña, Roxas,
Quezon stand in front of Laurel. Quirino, Magsaysay
Osmeña stand between Laurel and
Roxas. The remaining surname stands
behind everybody. Write and name the
surnames in order from first to last.

b. Main Activity
“While still in line, one member of the group
will go to the board and write the
corresponding word of the picture flashed on
the screen.” “Yes, Ma’am.”

“The fastest group will be the winner. Okay?”

ANSWERS:
1) MEASURE
2) POSITION
3) DIVIDE
4) DISTRIBUTION
5) FOUR
6) EQUAL
7) PARTS

“Ma’am based on our activity I think our

next lesson will be quartiles”

B. ANALYSIS

“How did you find the activity?”

“Now, according to our activity, do you have

any idea about our next lesson?”

“Our lesson for today is all about quartiles for

ungrouped data.

Quartiles- the score points which divide the

distribution into four equal parts. Twenty-five
percent (25%) of the distribution fall below
the first quartile, fifty percent (50%) fall
below the second quartile, and seventy-five
percent (75%) fall below the third quartile. 𝑄1
is called the lower quartile and 𝑄3 is the upper
quartile and 𝑄2 is the median or the middle
value in the data.

C. ABSTRACTION
“How can we identify the quartiles of
ungroup data?

𝑄1 𝑄2 𝑄3

1. 25% of the data has a value ≤ 𝑄1

2. 50% of the data has value ≤ X or 𝑄2
3. 75% of the data has a value ≤ 𝑄3

“Arrange first the data in ascending order

(from lowest to highest) ”

For example:
1) The owner of a coffee shop recorded “10 Ma’am”
the number of customers who came
into his café each hour in a day. The “9 Ma’am”
results were 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9,
14, 10 and 11. Find the lower quartile
and upper quartile. “14 Ma’am”

Solution:
 In ascending order, the data are 5, 8, 9,
9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14, 17.
 The least value in the data is 5 and the
greatest value is 17.
 𝑄2 Is the middle value in the data. So,
what is 𝑄2 or median?
 The lower quartile is the value that is
between the middle value and the least
value in the data set. So, what is the
lower quartile?
“Ma’am 180, 260, 290, 370, 430.”
 The upper quartile is the value that is
between the middle value and the
greatest value in the data set. So, the
“Ma’am the least value of the data is180 and
upper quartile is?
the greatest value is 430.”
2) Find the lower quartile and upper
quartile of the data.
“290 Ma’am”
Component Quantity
“260 Ma’am”
hard disk 290
“370 Ma’am”
Monitors 370
Keyboards 260
Mouse 180
Speakers 430

Solution: “To apply their method on a data set with n

 In increasing order, the data are? elements, first calculate:
the Lower Quartile(L) =
1
Position of 𝑄1= 4(n + 1)
 What are the least and greatest value? And round to the nearest integer. If L falls
halfway between two integers, round up.
The Lth element is the lower quartile value
 What is 𝑄2 ? (𝑄1).

 What is the lower quartile?

 And the upper quartile is? Upper Quartile(U) =
3
Position of 𝑄3 = 4(n + 1)
“There is another method to find the quartiles
of ungrouped data. It is called Mendenhall And round to the nearest integer. If U falls
and Sincich Method” halfway between two integers, round down.
The Uth element is the upper quartile value
“Please read.” (𝑄3 ).

“The next one.”

“Thank you.”

For the 𝑄2 ,
2 “3 Ma’am”
𝑄2 = 4(n + 1)
“Ma’am the 3rd data element is 7”
Now, let’s give an example:
Given the data set {1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27,
30, 31} and n= 9. Find 𝑄1 and 𝑄3

Solution:
1
𝑄1= 4(n + 1)
1
= 4(9 + 1)
1
= 4(10)
= 2.5
“7 Ma’am”
“It is said that If L falls halfway between two
integers, round up. So what is 𝑄1?
“Ma’am the 7th data element is 27”
“And what is the lower quartile value, the
third element in the data set?

“How about the upper quartile?” “Yes Ma’am”

3
𝑄3 = (n + 1)
4
3 “None Ma’am”
= 4(9 + 1)
3
= 4(10)
= 7.5

“It is said that If U falls halfway between two Solution:

integers, round down. What is 𝑄3 ?” 𝑄1= 4(11 + 1)
1
= 4(12)
“And what is the upper quartile value or the
=3rd element
7th element in the data set?
𝑄1 = 6
“Did you understand class?”

“Is there any question class?”

Solution:
3
𝑄3 = 4(11 + 1)
3
= 4(12)
4. APPLICATION

lesson.”

“I’ll give you a question and you will answer

Method.

“Goodbye Ma’am”

“Are you done class?”

“Okay! Exchange papers.”

V. ASSIGNMENT
“Get your notebook and copy your
assignment.”
A. Interview atleast 15 students in your
school. Write their names and age in
the box. Compute the 𝑄1 , 𝑄2, 𝑄3 using
Mendenhall and Sincich Method.
B. Research about decile. Find out on
how to solve decile of ungrouped data.

“That’s all for today. Goodbye class!”
