GLASS CALCULATION

I. General
To design adequate glass of a spider pin supported curtain wall meeting required criteria.
All units is in metric system.

II. Design Calculation

1 Design Code
BS 8118 Part 1:1991:Structural Use of Aluminium. Code of Practice for design
ASCE 7-05 Min. Design Loads for Buildings and other Structures

2 Material used
16 mm thick glass (8+1.5+8)

Allowable stress, heat strengthened Glass : 33.00 N/mm2

Allowable stress, tempered glass : 49.00 N/mm2
Allowable stress, structural sealant : 138.00 N/mm2
Modulus of Elasticity, E : 72000.00 N/mm2

3 Loading
Dead Load (DL) Glass weight : 0.4238 kN/m2
Wind Load
Basic Wind Speed, v : 45.00 m/s 3-sec gust
Length of Building, L : 75.00 m
Width of Building, W : 75.00 m
Height of Bldg., H : 122.00 m
Top of spider wall : 9.10 m
4 Load Combination
1.0 Dead Load (for service ability check)
1.0 Wind Load (for service ability check)
1.2 Dead Load ± Wind Load

5 Wind Load calculation

Refer to wind calculation for full details.

Max. Wind Pressure : 1.250 kN/m2

6 Analysis of Glass Panel

8 mm thk glass
1.5 binder
8 mm thk glass

Maximum aspect size on glass panel

Height = 3522 mm
Width = 1262 mm

Horizontal loading act on glass panel

wl = 1.25 kpa
Note: Assume the glass panel simply supported in 4 sides

glass
Check the bending stress of glass panel
Bending moment due to horizontal loading
M = q*L^2 / 8
Note: (consider 1000mm width)
q= 1.25 x 1= 1.25 N/mm
L= 1262 mm
M= 1.25 x 1262 ^2 / 8 = 248,851 Nmm

Bending stress due to wind loading

δ = M*6/(t^2*B) = 5.83 Mpa < 49 Mpa ok
Note:
B= 1000 mm
t= 16 mm (8+1.5+8)

Check the deflection of glass panel

Deflection due to horizontal loading
Note: (consider 1000mm width)
q= 1.25 x 1= 1.25 N/mm
L= 1262 mm
ExI= 2.4576E+10
deflection = 1.68 mm < 1262 / 60 = 21.0 mm ok

Analysis of structural sealant of glass panel

Area of glass panel = 4.4 m2

design wind speed = 1.25 kpa
required width of structural sealant
B= 1262 x 1.25 / ( 138 )
= 11.4 mm
