INTRODUCTION

Work Immersion

Work immersion is a key feature in the Senior High School curriculum and

refers to the part of that consists of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work

simulation which Grade 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual

work setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school.

With the four exits envisioned for SHS graduates—namely, higher

education, entrepreneurship, employment or middle-level skills development—the

first batch of Grade 12 learners are expected to become full-fledged contributors to

the social development and nation-building. Work immersion is a key subject

under the SHS curriculum that is conducted in different ways and time frame as

needed by SHS learners. The subject provides learners with opportunities to

become familiar with the workplace; for employment simulation, and to apply their

competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work

environments.

It aims to hone globally competitive citizens, with its specialized curriculum,

gearing Filipino students for further studies, employment or entrepreneurship.

Experience is considered to be one of life’s greatest teachers. As trainees, we can

use it as a motivation as we gain expertise in our respective fields. This experience

will surely help us not only for our life as students but also our future job as

professional employees of the country.

“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” As a student, having

experienced the 80 hours/10 days of work simulation is not as easy as we think it

could be. It can be full of hardships as we are new to this and certain adjustments

have to be done.

Purpose of Work Immersion

The purpose of immersion is to provide students (and through them the

broader College community) the opportunity to see a new perspective on the world

and the way other people live. It is necessary to released that one of the key

purposes of these sorts of experiences is to learn from the people you meet and to

stand in solidarity with them. In short, it attempts to develop sensitivity to the

difficulties of another’s situation. This helps to ensure that the experience is not

simply one of observing other people’s misfortune.

Significance of Work Immersion

During the hearing of the crafting and Enhancement Basic Education Act of

2013, many Filipinos expressed opposition from both parents and

educators/academes as well. Those who were against the proposed Act cited

different reasons, from additional years of school years and additional expenses

from the parents and readiness of the Department of Education as what are being

pointed out by the educators/academe. With due recognition given to the valid

reasons of the oppositions, the lawmakers see the urgency of amending the age-old

education system of the Philippines for the students to cope up with the challenges

of 21st century. Thus, the proposed Act was approved and enacted into law May of

2013.

The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 stipulates that two (2) more

years in high school shall be added, hence the creation of senior high school. The

Act is geared towards enhancing further the skills and knowledge of students for

them to be well equipped in facing the challenges that lay ahead, whether in

pursuing higher studies in college or in entering the very competitive employment

field.

To ensure further that the objective would be met, DepEd included two (2)

TRACKS in the curriculum; one the Academic Track which includes various

Strands for those students who wants to pursue higher education in college and

second, the Technical Vocational Livelihood Track for students that would opted

to work or find job after senior high school. The very purpose of these Tracks is to

further hone their interests and develop and enhance skills and knowledge of senior

high school in their chosen field of interest for them to be ready, competent and

equipped to confront the realities and challenges that lay ahead.

Furthermore, a Work Immersion Program was also conceptualized.

Basically, it aims to expose the students to the harsh realities of environment in a

workplace. This exposure also aims to develop and enhance the work ethics and

habits of senior high school students. It would also serve as an assessment tool on

the affectivity of the module designed for the purpose.

All Work Immersion Program exposures shall observe strict compliance of

all Philippine Laws and other Guidelines and Orders issued by proper government

agencies to ensure that the exposure program would protect the interest and

welfare of the students engaged in Immersion Work Program.

GENERAL ACADEMIC STRAND (GAS)

SAN JACINTO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BRGY. CAPAOAY, SAN JACINTO, PANGASINAN

This strand of the curriculum equates to what was most of the areas from the

old ICT scheme of work. Most of it can be covered by using technology to support

other subject areas though it may be necessary to teach some discrete

skills. Students should understand that technology is everywhere, be able to

identify the technology they encounter and have a basic understanding of how it

works. This will link to work on programming and algorithms.

Appropriate activities include word processing, creating images, taking and

using photographs and video, creating music and animations, using and creating

databases, producing websites and contributing to blogs. As well as creation of

digital materials pupils should have experience of manipulating and editing their

own work and resources from elsewhere. They need to know how to use the tools

available but also to have an element of digital literacy – awareness of audience

and good design principles. Pupils should experience a range of different

applications and software, initially the teacher will select the programs they use but

over time pupils should be encouraged to make decisions themselves.

Pupils also need to know how to store and organize their files so that it can

easily be found again. They need an understanding of the devices they can use

including: hard drive, USB sticks, school network server, and the cloud storage on

the internet.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The success and final outcome of this work immersion required
a lot of guidance and assistance from many people and I am
extremely privileged to have got this all along the completion of
my work immersion. All that I have done is only due to such
supervision and assistance and I would not forget to thank
them. I respect and thank Mrs. Mona Lisa Camacho for giving
us all support and guidance which made me complete and
confident in my work. I am extremely thankful for giving such a
nice guidance and assistance. I would not forget to remember
Mrs. Jeanne Meneses for their encouragement and more over
their support and guidance till we completed our work
immersion. I owe my deep gratitude to my family for guiding
me all along, and for showing love and support throughout my
work immersion journey,

NARRATIVE
REPORT

I was assigned at San Jacinto Catholic School (SJACS) to do our work

immersion. During our first day the Human Resource (HR) and Coordinator of

Senior High School Mrs. Maricris L. Buado oriented us. And they let us to pick

our partner to do our tasks. And we are expecting that we will be immerse on work

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BRGY. CAPAOAY, SAN JACINTO, PANGASINAN

that is related to our electives (Com Prog) but instead of doing computer literate

works we were subjected to type all of information of books. But being a student

we need to do the tasks that were assigned to us. We just really need to do our very

best to immerse to those students for us to accomplish and fulfill our duties and

responsibilities as an immersion student.

……………………………………..if you done yourv diary do it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

My immersion experience was not that great because I’m expecting to learn

more about my elective (comprog). But it was great to have this experience and

I’ve learned a lot of things especially on how to communicate with other people

and to handle things beyond my capabilities.

LEARNINGS

The work immersion I had in San Jacinto Catholic School (SJaCS) was

great. I learned a lot of things. I was exposed to many tasks that is not familiar to

me as a GAS student. Aside from those acquired learnings, I also learned to be

SAN JACINTO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BRGY. CAPAOAY, SAN JACINTO, PANGASINAN

sociable and to adjust myself in the environment where I am working at and who I

am working with.

In my ten days immersion, I’ve learned a lot of things not only related on

my strand but also the things that molded me to be the person that I am right now.

And having this immersion I learned to become a hard working person. I’ve also

learned that time is really important because every tasks that was given to me

should be finished on time. I’ve learned to appreciate every simple and little things

in my working place. I was able also to realized how important is instructions are,

that should be follow.

After my immersion I have realized that work immersion for student like

me is not just a requirement to be completed but an opportunity to show what

skills, talents, knowledge and realization I have and also an opportunity to

experience the feeling of being professional.

I really had an amazing work immersion even though it is not that

related to my strand but at least I learned how to grow even outside my box.

CONCLUSIONS
SAN JACINTO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BRGY. CAPAOAY, SAN JACINTO, PANGASINAN

Nothing beats experience as the perfect learning tool. This immersion gave

me an inspiration to become more hard working for me to pursue my dream and

goal in life. That despite of having a short time in my immersion, it was really a

meaningful one. The immersion helped me to show the best part of me and it also

enriched my confidence to become a successful individual someday.

This immersion made me realized that it is really good to know what you

are doing and to love it as if it is very important. As a student, what I can do for

now is to learn whatever I can in school, to be inspired and to love the path that I

am choosing.

It is also very heart whelming to accomplished something that is not just for

your school, teacher or family but for myself. It inspired me to become more

confident and determined to reach my dreams in the near future.

My work immersion is very helpful and will help me to continue the

journey that I am taking. I’m so blessed that I have this opportunity to have this

kind of experience.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK TO THE PERSON WHO NEVER LEFT BEHIND

OF MY ATTITUDE OR STRUGGLEOF LIFE
