The affixes prescribed by the rules starting from 3-1-
91 up to the end of Chapter Three (of the अष्टाध्यायी) are to be used following a verbal root.
In this ‘धात िः’
अचधकारिः (running from 3-1-91 up to the end of Chapter Three of the अष्टाध्यायी) a non-uniform affix
prescribed by an exception (अपवादिः) rule only optionally blocks the introduction of its general (उत्सर्गिः)
counterpart, as long as the affixes are not in the ‘स्त्रियाम्’ अचधकारिः (running from 3-3-94 स्त्रियां स्त्रक्तन् up to
Note: An affix is असरूपिः (non-uniform) with another affix if, after removing the
इत् letters, the two affixes don’t have the same form.
The affixes prescribed in the section starting from this सूत्रम् up to
3-1-132 च त्याचिच त्ये (that is prior to 3-1-133 ण्वयल्तृ ौ) get the designation “कृत्य”।
Note: In the काचशका this सूत्रम् is stated as 3-1-95 कृत्यािः प्राङ् ण्वयलिः।
The affixes designated as कृत् are used to denote the agent.
The affixes having the designation “कृत्य”, the affix “क्त” and the affixes that
have the sense of “खल्” (ref: 3-3-126 ईषद् दय िःसयषय कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रारेषय खल् ) are only used to denote the action
(भाविः) or the object (कमग)।
The affix चलिँङ् as well as the affixes having the designation “कृत्य” are
The affixes having the designation “कृत्य”, the affix “तृ ्” as well as चलिँङ् are used after a
verbal root when the agent is to be denoted as ‘deserving/worthy’.
The affix ल टिँ ् as well as the affixes having the designation “कृत्य”
are used after a verbal root when ‘direction/ordering’ (प्रै षिः) or ‘granting permission’ (अचतसर्गिः) or ‘proper

When immediately following a vowel, the
नकारिः of a कृत् affix gets णकारिः as a replacement, when preceded by a उपसर्गिः that has the चनचमत्तम्
(cause – रे फिः, षकारिः) to bring about णत्वम्।
Video
The affix यत् may be used following a verbal root ending in a vowel.

When the affix यत् follows, the ending आकारिः of the अङ्गम् is replaced by a

उदाहरणम् – स्तय त्यिः derived from the verbal root √स्तय (षटय ञ् स्तय तौ २. ३८).
Note: 1-1-5 stops the र्यणादे श: which would have been done by 7-3-84.
स्तय + य Note: The affix क्यप् is a चपत्। This allows 6-1-71 to apply in the next step.
The penultimate letter (आकारिः) of the verbal root √शास्
७०) is replaced by a इकारिः when followed by either -

११४१) should be included in the list of verbal roots whose
कारिः/जकारिः does not take a कवर्ाग देशिः (a letter of the क-वर्गिः as a substitute) when followed by the affix
उदाहरणम् – त्याज्यम् derived from the verbal root √त्यज् (त्यजिँ हानौ १.

Note: Since the affix “क्यप् ” is a चपत्, hence 6-1-71 applies.
Note: The affix क्यप् is a चकत्। This allows 1-1-5 to prevent 7-3-86 from
applying.

The designation उपपदम् is applied to a term which denotes a thing – like a pot etc.
– which is present (as the thing to be expressed) in a word ending in the locative case in the सूत्रम्। (The
affixes which are prescribed from this सूत्रम् onwards only apply in the presence of the उपपदम् when
applicable.) Note: This is a अचधकार-सूत्रम् which runs up to the end of Chapter Three of the अष्टाध्यायी। Note:
The affix “क” may be used after a verbal root ending in a आकार:, when in composition
with a उपसर्गिः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्ाग िः चक्रयाय र्े)।
४३) with the उपसर्गिः “प्र”।

A सयबिम् (term ending in a सयिँप् affix )
having the designation “उपपद” (ref: 3-1-92 तत्र पपदं सप्तमीस्त्र्रम् ) invariably compounds with a syntactically
related term as long as the compound does not end in a चतङ् affix.
A term denoted by a word ending in a nominative case in a
सूत्रम् which prescribes a compound gets the designation “उपसजगन”।
In a compound a term which has the designation “उपसजगन” should be
placed in the prior position.
Example continued from 1-2-43
The affix “क” is used following the verbal root √ग्ह् (ग्हिँ उपादाने ९. ७१)
when the agent (of the action) denotes a house.

When in composition with a पदम् which
denotes the object (of the action) a verbal root which ends in a आकारिः may take the affix “क” as long as
there is no उपसर्गिः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्ाग िः चक्रयाय र्े) associated with the verbal root. Note: The affix “क”
(prescribed by this सूत्रम्) is an exception to the affix “अण्” prescribed by 3-2-1 कमगण्यण् ।
१०) with the उपपदम् “धन”।

which ends in a सयप् affix (ref. 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट् छष्टा..), a verbal root which ends in a आकारिः may take the
affix “क”। The second part is “स्त्र्र:” – When in composition with a पदम् which ends in a सयप् affix (ref. 4-1-2
१०७७) may take the affix “क” to denote the
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 (सयचप), the term सयचप ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence “चि + भ्याम्” gets
step.
Now we form the compound between “चि भ्याम्” (which is the उपपदम्) and “प” using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19. Note:
Here “चि भ्याम्” is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसजगन-सञ्ज्ा by 1-2-43
In the compound, “चि भ्याम्” is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30

१०७७) with the उपसर्ग: “उद् ”।
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 (स्त्र्र:), the term सयचप (which ends in the seventh (locative) case) comes as अनयवृचत्त:
from the prior सूत्रम् 3-2-4 (सयचप)। Hence “आखय + आम्” gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ा here by 3-1-92
Note: The affix “क” is a चकत्। This allows 6-4-64 to apply in
Now we form the compound between “आखय + आम्” (which is the उपपदम्) and “उद् स्त्र्र” using the सूत्रम् 2-

The affix उण् may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below -
The उकार: in ययक् is उच्चारणारग :। ‘वायय’ gets the प्राचतपचदक-सञ्ज्ा by 1-2-

The affix तयमयिँन् as well as ण्वयल् may be used
following a verbal root to denote a future action when in conjunction with another action intended for the
future action.
Notes: (i) चक्रयाराग चक्रया is an action (चक्रया) whose अरग: (= प्रय जनम् ) is (another) action (चक्रया)।
(ii) Consider the two sentences (a) ओदनस् भक्षक याचत and (b) ओदनं भक्षक याचत । In both sentences the
affix ‘ण्वयल्’ has been used (in forming the प्राचतपचदकम् ‘भक्षक’) in the sense of the agent (as per 3-4-67 कतगरर
कृत्) of the action of eating. But in (a) the affix ‘ण्वयल्’ is prescribed by 3-1-133 ण्वयल्तृ ौ while in (b) it is
In (a) षष्ठी चवभस्त्रक्त: is used in ओदनस् as per 2-3-65
But in (b) चितीया चवभस्त्रक्त: is used in ओदनम् as per 2-3-2 कमगचण चितीया because in this
This is an important difference between
the affix ‘ण्वयल्’ prescribed by 3-3-10 versus the same affix prescribed by 3-1-133.
Here the action of ‘going’ (यान-चक्रया) is the चक्रयाराग
The प्राचतपचदकम् ‘द्रष्टय म्’ as well as ‘दशगक’ is derived from the verbal root √दृश् (दृचशिँर् प्रे क्षणे १. The

The affix तयमयिँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with a

permission’ (अचतसर्गिः) or ‘proper time’ (प्राप्तकालिः), this affix तयमयिँन् does not apply.
Note: 7-2-10 stops the augment ‘इट् ’ which would have been done by 7-2-

synonyms of only √अस् qualify as a उपपदम्। Synonyms of any of the other ten verbal roots don’t qualify.
But Apte does not agree with this view because it would mean disqualifying many standard usages of good

The affix ‘क्त्वा’ – even when augmented by ‘इट् ’ – retains the property of being
a चकत् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) when it follows the verbal root √मृ ड् (मृडिँ सयखने ६.
(i) in the case of √मृ ड्, √मृ द्, √वद् and √वस् – 1-2-18 would have removed the चकत् property of the affix ‘क्त्वा’
(ii) in the case of √र्यध्, √कयष् and √स्त्रक्लश् – 1-2-26 would have optionally removed the चकत् property of the
affix ‘क्त्वा’।
वस् + इत्वा 1-2-7 allows the affix ‘इत्वा’ to retain its चकत् status in spite of 1-2-18. This allows 6-1-15 to apply
‘उचषत्वा’ gets the प्राचतपचदक-सञ्ज्ा by 1-2-46 and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ा by 1-1-40.
is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6).
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्त्र्राचनवदादे श ऽनस्त्रल्वधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप् ’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the
property of being a चकत् affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93) and आधगधातय कम् (by 3-4-114.)
is derived from the verbal root √र्म् (र्मिँ र्तौ १. ११३७) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘उप’ and ‘सम्’।
‘र्म् + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘उप’ and ‘सम्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कयर्चतप्रादयिः।

elision (prescribed by 6-4-38) is optional in the case of the verbal roots which end in the letter ‘म्’ and have
In the remaining cases the elision is invariable (not optional.)
As per 1-1-56 स्त्र्राचनवदादे श ऽनस्त्रल्वधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप् ’ (in place of the affix
‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a चकत् affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93). Hence
As per 1-1-56 स्त्र्राचनवदादे श ऽनस्त्रल्वधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप् ’ (in place of the affix
‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being an affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93). Hence
derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनिँ चहं सार्त्य िः २. २) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘चन’। As per ‘नािाचनटां
वनादीनां चनत्यम्’ there is no optional form here. The derivation of चनहत्य is similar to that of
उपसंर्त्य/उपसङ्गत्य shown above.
The letter ‘आ’ of the verbal roots listed in 6-4-66 ियमास्त्र्रार्ापाजहाचतसां हचल
does not get the letter ‘ई’ as a replacement, when followed by the affix ‘ल्यप् ’।
(र्ीता 11-44) प्रचणधाय is derived from the
११) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’ and ‘चन’।
‘धा + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘प्र’ and ‘चन’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कयर्चतप्रादयिः।
1-3-3, 1-3-8, 1-3-9. Note: 6-4-69 prevents 6-4-66 from applying here.
The letter ‘न्’ of the उपसर्ग: ‘चन’ gets the letter ‘ण् ’ as a
replacement, when the following two conditions are satisfied -
(i) ‘चन’ is preceded by a उपसर्गिः that has the चनचमत्तम् (cause – रे फिः, षकारिः) to bring about णत्वम् and
(ii) ‘चन’ is followed by the verbal root √र्द् (र्दिँ व्यक्तायां वाच १. ५६) or
६५) or any verbal root having the designation ‘िय’ (ref. 1-1-

As per 1-1-56 स्त्र्राचनवदादे श ऽनस्त्रल्वधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप् ’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’)
inherits the property of being an affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93). Hence ‘प्रचणधाय’ gets the

‘नचम + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘प्र’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कयर्चतप्रादयिः।
As per 1-1-56 स्त्र्राचनवदादे श ऽनस्त्रल्वधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप् ’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits
the property of being an affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93). Hence ‘प्रणमय्य’ gets the प्राचतपचदक-
When the substitution ‘ष्’ or the augment ‘तयिँक्’ is to be
performed, a single replacement (in place of the preceding and following letter) is treated as if it has not
occurred.
Note: अचस त् is derived from the verbal root √चस ् (चष िँ क्षरणे ६. The
The सूत्रम् 3-1-53 चलचपचसच ह्वश्च prescribes the substitution ‘अङ् ’ in
place of ‘स्त्रच्ल’।
6-1-109. As per 6-1-85, we may treat क ऽचस त् as क् ओचस त् and hence 8-3-59 would apply
here. But now 6-1-86 intervenes and says that when it comes to a possible substitution by the letter ‘ष्’, the
single substitute ‘ओ’ (in place of ‘ओ + अ’) is to be treated as if it has not occurred. Thus 8-3-59 still sees
क + अचस त् and the substitution by the letter ‘ष्’ cannot take place.
(र्ीता 14-20) अतीत्य is
derived from the verbal root √इ (इण् र्तौ २. ४०) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘अचत’।
1-3-3, 1-3-8, 1-3-9. Note: 1-1-5 prevents 7-3-84 from applying.
Since the affix ‘य’ is no longer preceded by a short vowel, 6-1-71 would not apply here.
But now 6-1-86 intervenes and says that when it comes to a possible addition of the augment ‘तयिँक्’, the
single substitute ‘ई’ (in place of ‘इ + इ’) is to be treated as if it has not occurred. Thus 6-1-71 still sees अचत
As per 1-1-56 स्त्र्राचनवदादे श ऽनस्त्रल्वधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप् ’ (in place of the affix
‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being an affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93). Hence ‘अतीत्य’ gets the

to that of another verbal root, provided the agent of both the actions is the same. Note: The अनयवृचत्त: of the
entire prior सूत्रम् 3-4-21 समानकतृगकय िः पू वगकाले comes down in to this सूत्रम् 3-4-22.
derived from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १).
Note: 7-2-11 stops the augment ‘इट् ’ which would have been done by 7-2-35. 1-1-5
prevents 7-3-84 from applying. ‘भू त्वा’ gets the प्राचतपचदक-सञ्ज्ा by 1-2-46 and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ा by 1-1-40.
‘भावम्’ gets the प्राचतपचदक-सञ्ज्ा by 1-2-46 and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ा by 1-1-39.
आभीक्ष्ण्ण्यम् (repetition of action) can only apply to words
ending in चतङ् affixes as well as words ending in कृत् affixes having the designation अव्ययम्।
वीप्सा (pervasion of a thing by a property or action) can only apply to words ending in सयिँप्
affixes.
(Someone) waters tree after tree (= every tree.)
(र्ीता 2-59) ‘वजगम्’ is
derived from the verbal root √वृज् (वृजीिँ वजगने १०.
Note: The पदमञ्जरी commentary says – परीप्सायाचमचत प्राचयकम् meaning
that the condition परीप्सायाम् (to express haste) is not strictly required to use the सूत्रम् 3-4-53. This is
inferred from the fact that पाचणचन: himself has used 3-4-53 in deriving the word एकवजग म् (in the सूत्रम् 6-1-
158 अनयदात्तं पदमेकवजगम्) even though ‘haste’ is not apparent. Similarly here in the word रसवजगम् 3-4-53 has
been used even though the condition of परीप्सायाम् is not strictly satisfied.
Now we form the compound between ‘रस अम्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘वजग म्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19.
Note: Here ‘रस अम्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसजगन-सञ्ज्ा by 1-2-43
In the compound, ‘रस अम्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30
