Ascending and Descending Order of Numbers

Arranging numbers from the smallest to the greatest is called ascending order. We use the
symbol ‘<’ to write the numbers in ascending order.
Examples:
Write the following numbers in ascending order.
1. 1,248; 126; 3,413; 263
Ans. 126 < 263 < 1,248 < 3,413
Choose the correct answer.
2. 1,245; 3,000; 1,234; 2,315
Which of the following is true?
Ans. 1,234 < 1,245 < 2,315 < 3,000 1. 3467 < 3647 < 3674
Arranging numbers from the greatest to 2. 3467 > 3647 > 3674
the smallest is called descending order. 3. 3647 < 3467 < 3674
We use the symbol ‘>’ to write the 4. 3674 > 3467 > 3647
numbers in descending order.

Examples:
Write the following numbers in Choose the correct answer.
descending order. Which of the following is true?
1. 963; 1,275; 345; 1,017 1. 1500 < 1300 < 900
Ans. 1,275 > 1,017 > 963 > 345 2. 1500 > 1300 > 900
2. 2,678; 3,415; 967; 1,146 3. 1500 > 900 > 1300
4. 1300 < 900 < 1500
Ans. 3,415 > 2,678 > 1,146 > 967

Formation of the Greatest and the Smallest Number (without

Repetition of Digits)
We know that the digit at the extreme left of a number has the greatest place value.

Mathematics
So, to form the greatest number using the given digits, we arrange the digits in descending
order.
To form the smallest number, we arrange the digits in ascending order.
Examples:
1. The greatest number formed using the digits 8, 3, 6, and 7 is 8,763.
2. The smallest number formed using the digits 8, 3, 6 and 7 is 3,678.
When we arrange the digits 4, 3, 7, and 0 in ascending order, we get 0347. A number
cannot begin with 0. So, we place the zero after the first non-zero digit. Thus, we get the
smallest number as 3,047.

Formation of the Greatest and the Smallest Number (with

Repetition of Digits)
When the number of given digits are less, the greatest digit can be repeated to form the
greatest number.
Example:
Form the greatest four-digit number using the digits 3, 2, and 5.
Steps:
1. The descending order of the given digits is 5, 3, and 2.
2. Repeat the greatest digit, 5.
Ans. Thus, we get the greatest number as 5,532.

79
To form the smallest number, we arrange the digits in ascending order and repeat the
smallest digit.
Example: Remember
Form the smallest four-digit number using the • The greatest digit to the smallest
digits 3, 2, and 5. digit for forming the greatest number.
• The smallest digit to the greatest digit
Steps: for forming the smallest number.
1. The descending order of the given digits is 2, Isn’t that easy?
3, and 5.
2. Repeat the smallest digit, 2.
Ans. Thus, we get the smallest number as 2,235.
Mathematics

Activity
Reading and forming numbers
Materials required: flash cards for numbers from 0 to 9
Method:
Four students should come to the front and pick up a card each and stand in any order showing
the cards to the class. Suppose the digits are 3, 6, 5, and 9, the entire class should read the number
as three thousand six hundred and fifty-nine.
The four students should then change places to form the greatest number using the same digits.
The entire class should say the number name for the number formed.
Next, the same set of students should change places to form the smallest number using the same
digits and the entire class should be asked to say the number name for the number formed.
This activity may be repeated for some more four-digit numbers. Three-digit and two-digit
numbers could also be practised in this way. The teacher should ensure that all students
participate in the activity.

Success means to go ahead.

Successor and Predecessor So, to get the successor of a
number, you add 1.
The number that comes just after a given Isn’t that easy to remember?
number is called its successor.
Examples:
1. 78 comes just after 77. So, 78 is the successor of 77.
2. 123 comes just after 122. So, 123 is the successor of 122.
3. 3,456 comes just after 3,455. So, 3,456 is the successor of 3,455.
