Артиклі в англійській мові

1. Артикль з особовими іменами:

1. Імена людей вживаються без артикля.
e.g Tom wakes up at 7 o’clock every day.
 Артикль не використовується також зі словами  home  (дім),  mother
(мати),  mom (мама), father (батько), dad (тато), коли мова йде про
власний дім або батьків мовця.
e.g. Dad bought a new car last week. 
2. Випадки, коли з особовими іменами вживається означений
артикль:
 Разом з прізвищами з закінченням -s, коли ми маємо на увазі всю
родину
e.g. The Simpsons live next by my.
 Коли імена виражаються через прикметники. (замінені
прикметниками)
e.g. The silent Mrs. Smith was really weird woman.
 Інколи іменник замінений прикметником вказує на важливу
частину спілкування, тоді ми вживаємо неозначений артикль.
Прикметник зазвичай вказує на настрій описаної людини:
e.g. I saw a frightened July, who started calling for help
 Ми не ставимо артикль перед власними іменниками, які виражені
прикметниками: old, young, dear, poor, little, tiny, honest:
e.g. Honest pupils usualy have good marks.
 Означений артикль вживається з назвами, які виражені певними
обмежувальними означеннями (зазвичай вони виступають фразами,
які стоять після назви)
e.g.There has been the Mary I’ve seen before, so beautiful and marvelous.
3. Неозначений артикль вживається в таких випадках:
 Особові імена вживаються з таким артиклем, коли ми хочемо
сказати про члена сім’ї та коли людина нам когось нагадує.
e.g. That girl reminded me my cousin, a Martina.
 Особові імена вживаються з неозначеним артиклем, коли перед ним
є прикметник certain.
e.g. Of course, you had to admit that he was a certain Scrooge McDuck.
Note: якщо перед назвою стоїть Mr., Miss, Colonel, Sir, etc. , то неозначений
артикль є тим же самим, що і certain.(таке може бути і з просто особовими
іменами)
e.g. We met a Mr. Tompson, who had become a doctor before.
 Особові імена стають загальними іменниками, коли вони
позначають речі, що пов’язані з іменами якихось людей. Такі
іменники мають вживатися з артиклями, як загальні назви.
e.g.Has the room painting of a Leonardo?
 2. Артикль з географічними назвами
1. Артикль не використовується:
 з назвами континентів: Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, etc.
e.g. Asia is the most populous continent.
Note: The Arctic and the Antarctic (вживаються з означеним артиклем, оскільки
вони позначають регіони, а саме землю та море на північному та південному
полюсах)
 з назвами штатів, провінцій, країн:
e.g. Next week Pierre will go back to France
Note: Деякі імена країн, округів і т.д. вживаються з означеним артиклем, або і
без нього. the Argentine (but: Argentina), (the) Congo, (the) Lebanon, (the) Senegal,
the Ruhr, the Saa'r, the Ukraine, the Crimea
Назви країн, що складається з кількох слів вживаються з означеним артиклем
the Soviet Union, the United States of America (the USA), the German Democratic
Republic (the JDR).
 з назвами міст, сіл:
e.g. London is situated on the river Thames
Note: the Hague.
 з назвами поодиноких гір, островів:
e.g. Elbrus is the highest mountain of European continent
Note: перед назвами груп островів, групи озер, гірських хребтів ставиться THE
(адже вони вказують на групу предметів)
e.g. We were in the Alps, on one of the most spectacular train journeys you
can make.
 з назвами озер:
e.g. Baikal is the deepest lake in the whole world 
 з назвами водоспадів:
e.g. Niagara Falls  is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end
of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the US state of New York and
the Canadian province of Ontario. 
 з назвами заток:
e.g. Hudson Bay is a large body of saltwater in northeastern Canada with a
surface area of 1,230,000 km
 з назвами півостровів та мисів(Hindustan, Labrador, Cape Horn):
e.g. Cape Horn  is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del
Fuego archipelago of southern Chile, and is located on the small Hornos Island.
Note: Якщо іменник peninsula додається до власної назви, тоді зі
словосполученням буде вживатися означений артикль.
e.g. I've just returned from spending a month at Palmer Station, a US research
base on the Antarctic peninsular .
2. Інші географічні назви вживаються з означеним артиклем,такі як:
 назви морів, океанів, річок, проток та каналів(the Atlantic (ocean),
the Mediterranean (Sea), the North Sea, the Thames, the Mississippi, the
Dardanelles, the Bering Strait, the Suez Canal, the English Channel)
e.g. The North Sea is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean located
between Great
 Britain (England and Scotland), Denmark, Norway, Germany,
the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
 назви гірських хребтів і груп островів (the Pennine Range (thе
Pennines) , the Alps, the Rocky Mountains, the Canary Islands (the
Canaries), the Hawaii, the Bermudas:
e.g. The Bermudas a group of islands in the Atlantic.
 назви пустель:
e.g. The Sahara is a desert located on the African continent.
 назви гірських перевалів:

e.g.  Today the Gotthard Pass is the main North-South connection,

traversed by leisure hikers and pass enthusiasts.
 географічні назви, які вживаються у множині:
e.g.  the Midlands, the Netherlands, the Yorkshire Forests
3. Географічні назви, які зазвичай вживаються з нульовим артиклем,
але під впливом деяких факторів, можуть брати означений та
неозначений артиклі:
 Якщо конкретний артикль вживається з географічною назвою, то
потрібно вказувати означений артикль.

e.g. It was not the France of his youth.

 Якщо описовий артикль вживається з географічною назвою, то
потрібно вказувати неозначений артикль.
e.g. It was a different Paris, unknown to him.
 Означений артикль використовується в таких словосполученнях,
коли перед ним стоїть прийменник of.
e.g. the Bay of Biskay, the City of New York, the Mount of Olives, the Isle of
Man, the Gulf of Mexico, the Strait of Dover.
3. Артиклі з іншими семантичними групами власних назв
1. Власні назви наступних семантичних груп вживається без артикля:
 Назви вулиць, скверів, парків та інших(Broadway, Fleet Street, Wall
Street, Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square, Central Park, Hyde Park)
e.g. She lied about being assaulted in Central Park.
Note: Виключеннями є the Strand (in London), the High Street, the Main
Street (in the USA).
 Назви аеропортів та залізничних станцій(London Airport, Kennedy
Airport, Waterloo Station, Victoria Station).
e.g. Now, I got you first-class ticket out of that left wing Kennedy Airport?
 Назви університетів та коледжів(Oxford University, Harvard
University, Brasenose College, Hertford College).
e.g. I have a double degree from Harvard University.
 Назви газет та журналів (National Geographic, Punch, Language)
e.g. The medal is named for Gardiner Greene Hubbard, the first National
Geographic Society president
 Назви днів тижня та місяців(Monday, Tuesday, April, July).
 e.g. Satellite images from August 2012 show the containment vessel
building shrouded.
 Назви установ та мостів (Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey,
Colosseum, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Bridge, Tower Bridge).
e.g. I did the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's cathedral
Note: Виключеннями є the White House, the Tower, the Old Bailey.
4. Деякі семантичні групи слів потребують означений артикль. Серед
них є:
 Назви готелів, клубів, музеїв, картинних галерей, концертних залів,
театрів, кінотеатрів та монументів (the Hilton, the National Tennis
Club, the National Gallery, the British Museum, the Louvre, the
Carnegie Hall, the Albert Hall, the Old Vic, the Odeon, the Washington
Monument, the Lincoln Memorial):
e.g. During the Paris tour of 2010, they acted on the stage of the
Odeon Theater.
I will be staying at the Hilton.
 Назви кораблів та суден (The Titanic, the Queen Mary).
e.g. Friendo, you're first mate on the Titanic, and you're filling up lifeboats
with caviar
 Назви партій та інституцій (the Conservative Party, the Democratic
Party, the London City Council, the House of Commons).
e.g. If your looking for comfortable accommodation in the centre of the
London city which is convenient, quiet and great value for money look no
further than Crownwall hotel.
Note: Parliament у Великій Британії пишеться без артикля (але: the
British Parliament). Означений артикль перед Congress (у США) може
упускати, але граматично правильно його все ж таки вказувати.
 Назви газет(the Morning Star, the Daily World, the Economist, the
Times).
e.g. In 1968 the Communist Party resumed publication of a New York daily
paper, now titled The Daily World.
Translate these sentences:
1. Ти збираєшся в Лондон?
2. Вона живе в Сполучених Штатах Америки.
3. Вона народилася в Росії.
4. Вони відвідали Мадагаскар.
5. Дон – велика річка.
6. Я побачила дівчину, яка вкрала у мене сумку в Луврі.
7. Серед всіх класичних виконавців, потрібно відзначити артистів з Гавайського
Оперного Театру.
8. Штаб-квартира знаходиться біля Тауерського моста.
9. Біля дитячого садочку було багато малих.
10. Ми побачили того самого містера Джонсона, голову сім’ї Джонсонів.
11. Мама почувалася не дуже добре.
12. Колись давно веселий хлопець чекав свою дівчину біля Букінгемського
палацу.
