1. Why We Should Be Thankful

1.1 A direct command of God, which is related to being in God’s will

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called
to live in peace. And always be thankful. Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.
Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to
God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks through him to God the Father.” (Colossians 3:15–17, NLT)

A key to release God’s supernatural power

so that they will believe you sent me.” Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And the dead man
came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them,
“Unwrap him and let him go!”” (John 11:41–44, NLT)

The simplest “work” is to express faith by giving thanks

Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had
done. This man was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Has
no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” And Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and
go. Your faith has healed you.”” (Luke 17:12–19, NLT)

I. The Penalties For Unthankfulness

Murmuring has no place in Christian service

“Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean,
innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse
people. Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not
run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.” (Philippians 2:14–16, NLT)

Murmuring is one of the various sins that brought judgment on Israel and is a warning to us
today

“These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, or
worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and
drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.” And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some
of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day. Nor should we put Christ to the test, as some of
them did and then died from snakebites. And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were
destroyed by the angel of death.” (1 Corinthians 10:6–10, NLT)

 “The ten men Moses had sent to explore the land—the ones who incited rebellion against the LORD
with their bad report—were struck dead with a plague before the LORD.” (Numbers 14:36–37, NLT)

complained. “There is nothing to eat here and nothing to drink. And we hate this horrible manna!” So
the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people, and many were bitten and died. Then the people
came to Moses and cried out, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Pray
that the LORD will take away the snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people. Then the LORD told him,
“Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply
look at it!” So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was
bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed!” (Numbers 21:4–9, NLT)

II. Conclusion- A positive, effective way to acknowledge God

and seek His direction in your life

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all
you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (Proverbs 3:5–6, NLT)

III. Having a attitude of Greatfulness

I recently spent some time thinking about what Bad attitude bothers God the most. I believe it’s an
ungrateful attitude.

If you’re a parent, you can probably relate to that. You work hard to do all you can for your kids and you’d
jump at the chance to do it all over again if they’d just say, “Thanks, Mom” or “Thanks, Dad. I sure do
appreciate the things you do for me.” But not all children display that kind of maturity.

Many times, they’ll come home murmuring and complaining, “I want this” and “I want that” and “Why
won’t you do this one thing for me?” That’s pretty aggravating, isn’t it?

As God’s children, many Christians probably sound the same way to Him!

That’s why I believe we need to take a fresh look at ourselves and the importance of having a thankful
attitude toward God.

IV. What the Israelites Couldn’t Figure Out

After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, they grumbled, murmured and complained. They didn’t like his
leadership, and they were tired of eating manna. They actually wanted to go back to Egypt where they were
beaten and forced to work long hours in the sun.

The Israelites thought their enemies were the reason they couldn’t get to the Promised Land, but it was their
attitude that kept them wandering around in the wilderness. (SeeNumbers 11)

புசிக்கக்கொடுப்பவர் யார்? நாம் எகிப்திலே கிரயமில்லாமல் சாப்பிட்ட மச்சங்களையும்,
வெள்ளரிக்காய்களையும், கொம்மட்டிக்காய்களையும், கீரைகளையும், வெண்காயங்களையும், வெள்ளைப்
பூண்டுகளையும் நினைக்கிறோம். இப்பொழுது நம்முடைய உள்ளம் வாடிப்போகிறது; இந்த மன்னாவைத் தவிர,
நம்முடைய கண்களுக்கு முன்பாக வேறொன்றும் இல்லையே என்று சொன்னார்கள். அந்த மன்னா
கொத்துமல்லி விதையம்மாத்திரமும், அதின் நிறம் முத்துப்போலவும் இருந்தது. ஜனங்கள் போய் அதைப்
பொறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவந்து, ஏந்திரங்களில் அரைத்தாவது உரல்களில் இடித்தாவது, பானைகளில்
சமைப்பார்கள்; அதை அப்பங்களுமாகச் சுடுவார்கள்; அதின் ருசி புது ஒலிவ எண்ணெயின் ருசிபோலிருந்தது.
இரவிலே பாளயத்தின்மேல் பனிபெய்யும்போது, மன்னாவும் அதின்மேல் விழும். அந்தந்த வம்சங்களைச் சேர்ந்த
ஜனங்கள் தங்கள் தங்கள் கூடாரவாசலில் நின்று அழுகிறதை மோசே கேட்டான்; கர்தத ் ருக்கு மிகவும் கோபம்
மூண்டது; மோசேயின் பார்வைக்கும் அது பொல்லாப்பாயிருந்தது.
(Num 11:1-10)
 All they needed to do was be positive.

Now, think about the things in your life that you were so excited about when God first blessed you—
the baby you were praying for, the spouse you longed for, that promotion you tried so hard to get.
They may be the very thing you complain about today!

The nature of human flesh, if it is not disciplined and controlled by the Holy Spirit, will always drift
toward the negative. You never have to try to complain, but it does take a lot of faith and effort to
maintain a grateful, thankful attitude.

V. Appreciating Your Time in the Wilderness

You may think it’s a little bit strange to say this, but I think we need to learn to appreciate our trials a lot
more than we do because they’re what make us grow and mature in godly character.

You see, in hard times, we tend to experience more of His nearness and power in our lives. It’s in those
times that we really come to know Him.

Complaining actually opens a door for the devil. We need to learn to thank God in everything.

Don’t go to lunch with someone and spend the whole time talking about your problems. Remember,
recall and recount the good things God is doing in your life.

Talk about your Red Sea moments. Remember the manna He gave you last week. Remember the
resurrections you’ve had in your life. The Bible says to fix your mind on those things that are worthy of
praise (see Philipians 4:8)

் ்தியுள்ளவைகளெவைகளோ, புண்ணியம் எதுவோ, புகழ் எதுவோ அவைகளையே
சிந்தித்துக்கொண்டிருங்கள்.
(Php 4:8)
Remember those things. Talk about those things.

I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy to do. It’s much easier to make excuses and feel sorry for
yourself because things will happen to you that don’t seem fair. The key is to keep saying, “I trust
You, God, and I believe You will work it all out for my good.”

VI. The Benefit of Believing God

It’s a wonderful thing that God has done for us to be able to look at a negative thing in a positive way and
actually say, “You cannot defeat me because God is on my side.”

I want to have a good attitude because that’s what will glorify God. He has promised that if we will do
three simple things—continue to pray, to love Him, and to want His will—that all things will work together
for our good (see Romans 8:28)

அன்புகூருகிறவர்களுக்குச் சகலமும் நன்மைக்கு ஏதுவாக நடக்கிறதென்று அறிந்திருக்கிறோம்.
(Rom 8:28)
 That’s a 100 percent, ironclad guarantee that no matter how messy life gets, God will make good out of
it. If you want victory in your life, all you have to do is adopt a lifestyle of thanksgiving.

If you can manage to be thankful in every situation, really believing that God is working everything out
for your good, you will end up with the victory every single time.

VII. Effects of Praise

Living a life of praise is not only the most enjoyable way to live, but it’s also one of the most powerful
ways to change your life. Praise isn’t like the caboose that just follows what happens, but it’s more like
the engine of a train that makes things happen. Your faith isn’t complete without praise.

(Col 2:7)

says that you abound in faith with thanksgiving. No thanksgiving equals not abounding in faith.

Praise affects you, it affects the devil, and it affects God. It touches everything and every part of your
life. Likewise, a lack of praise affects you in a negative way, turns the devil loose in your life, and
doesn’t bless God. You have to get this area of your life right.

Nearly everyone agrees that praise is good, but very few feel any responsibility to praise God when
they don’t feel like it. I don’t know anyone who wakes up in the morning and plans on being
depressed. They would like to be happy and praise God, but they don’t feel they have any control over
this. They think that praise is just a response to what happens and that if everything goes right, they
will automatically do it. That is definitely not the case.

The Lord told His disciples the night before His crucifixion not to let their hearts be troubled
VIII. Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

Paul didn’t just say it once; he said it twice. He didn’t want anyone thinking he had made a mistake or
that there were exceptions to what he said. We are always supposed to be rejoicing in the Lord. It’s a
command, not a suggestion to do it if we feel like it.

Paul lived what he preached. When he was beaten and thrown in the deepest darkest part of the
dungeon, he and Silas broke out in praise at midnight

அதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். சடிதியிலே சிறைச்சாலையின் அஸ்திபாரங்கள் அசையும்படியாகப்
பூமி மிகவும் அதிர்நத ் து; உடனே கதவுகளெல்லாம் திறவுண்டது; எல்லாருடைய கட்டுகளும்
கழன்றுபோயிற்று.
(Act 16:22-26)
 They didn’t just do this as spiritual warfare. They weren’t praising God through gritted teeth, just to
get out of their problem. When they were set free, they didn’t leave. They were actually praising God
because they loved Him and were worshiping out of a pure heart. It so affected the other prisoners that
none of them left either. Praise caused a revival.

We may not feel joyful, but Scripture tells us in Galatians 5:22

that the fruit of the Spirit is joy. If we have the Holy Spirit, we have joy. We may not feel that joy, but
we can choose to lift our hands and speak forth praise to God by faith. Learning to praise God even
when everything is going badly will change our hearts, make us much more effective, and cause our
faith to abound.

I truly believe that my choice to praise God, even after getting the report that my son was dead, was
one of the biggest factors in seeing him raised from the dead after nearly five hours. I didn’t know
what the outcome would be, but I started praising God with all of my heart and telling Him—and the
devil—that regardless, I would not quit serving Him. It was at that moment that faith abounded in my
heart, and I knew he would be raised from the dead. Thank You, Jesus!

We have to accept responsibility. We aren’t just elevated animals, responding to stimuli. We are
created in the image of God. We can choose to say that we are going to give thanks and rejoice in the
Lord. But until we do, we are victims. We will never be victors until we quit being victims. We have to
get rid of the excuses and just do what the Word of God says.

Philippians 4:6 says—

ஸ்தோத்திரத்தோடே கூடிய ஜெபத்தினாலும் வேண்டுதலினாலும் தேவனுக்குத் தெரியப்படுத்துங்கள்.
(Php 4:6)
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known unto God.

Do you know what the Greek word for “nothing” in that verse means? It means nothing! It means there
are no exceptions. Sure, you might have problems, but you don’t have to worry about them. You don’t
have to be careful about them. You can go to the Lord in prayer with thanksgiving and make your
requests known to Him.

Jesus demonstrated the right way to bring our requests to God. He used what I call the “sandwich
technique,” where we sandwich our requests in between two slices of praise. We start with praise, and
we end with praise. We can just look at how Jesus did it in the Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13).

(Mat 6:9-13)
He started by praising God: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” And He finished
by praising God: “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.” That’s the way to
do it.

Even in the Old Testament, believers were told to “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his
courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name” (Ps. 100:4).

But the nation of Israel didn’t always do this. In fact, the Lord said that because they did not serve the
Lord with joyfulness and gladness for the abundance of all things, He was going to bring judgment
upon them (Deut. 28:47-57).

கர்தத் ர் உனக்கு விரோதமாய் அனுப்பும் சத்துருக்களைச் சேவிப்பாய்; அவர்கள் உன்னை அழித்துத்
தீருமட்டும், இருப்பு நுகத்தடியை உன் கழுத்தின்மேல் போடுவார்கள். கிழவன் என்று முகம்பாராமலும்,
வாலிபன் என்று இரங்காமலும் இருக்கும் கொடிய முகமுள்ளதும், உனக்குத் தெரியாத பாஷையைப்
பேசுகிறதுமான ஜாதியை வெகுதூரத்திலுள்ள பூமியின் கடையாந்தரத்திலிருந்து கர்தத ் ர் உன்மேல் கழுகு

திராட்சரசத்திலும், எண்ணெயிலும், உன் மந்தைகளிலுள்ள ஆடுமாடுகளிலும் உனக்கு ஒன்றும் மீதியாக
வைக்கமாட்டான். உன் தேசமெங்கும் நீ நம்பியிருக்கும் உயரமும் அரணிப்புமான உன் மதில்கள் விழுமளவும்,
அவன் உன் வாசல்களிலெங்கும் உன்னை முற்றிகைப்போடுவான்; உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உனக்குக்
கொடுத்த உன்னுடைய தேசமெங்குமுள்ள உன்னுடைய வாசல்கள்தோறும் உன்னை முற்றிகைப்போடுவான்.
உன் சத்துருக்கள் உன்னை முற்றிகைப்போட்டு நெருக்குங்காலத்தில், உன் தேவனாகிய கர்தத ் ர் உனக்குக்
கொடுத்த உன் கர்ப்பக்கனியான உன் புத்திரபுத்திரிகளின் மாம்சத்தைத் தின்பாய். உன் சத்துருக்கள் உன்
வாசல்களிலெங்கும் உன்னை முற்றிகைப்போட்டு நெருக்குங்காலத்தில், உன்னிடத்தில் செருக்கும்
சுகசெல்வமுமுள்ள மனிதன் சகலத்தையும் இழந்து, தன் இல்லாமையினாலே தான் தின்னும் தன்
பிள்ளைகளின் மாம்சத்திலே, தன் சகோதரனுக்காகிலும், தன் மார்பில் இருக்கிற மனைவிக்காகிலும்,
தனக்கு மீந்திருக்கிற தன் மக்களில் ஒருவனுக்காகிலும் கொஞ்சமேனும் கொடாதபடி அவர்கள்மேல்
வன்கண்ணாயிருப்பான். உன்னிடத்தில் சுகசெல்வத்தினாலும் செருக்கினாலும் தன் உள்ளங்காலைத்
தரையின்மேல் வைக்க அஞ்சின செருக்கும் சுகசெல்வமுமுள்ள ஸ்திரீ தன் கால்களின் நடுவே புறப்பட்ட
தன் நஞ்சுக்கொடியினிமித்தமும், தான் பெற்ற பிள்ளைகளினிமித்தமும், தன் மார்பில் இருக்கிற
புருஷன்மேலும் தன் குமாரன்மேலும் தன் குமாரத்தியின்மேலும் வன்கண்ணாயிருப்பாள்; உன் சத்துருக்கள்
உன் வாசல்களில் உன்னை முற்றிகைப்போட்டு நெருக்குங்காலத்தில், சகலமும் குறைவுபடுவதினால்,
அவைகளை இரகசியமாய்த் தின்னுவான்.
(Deu 28:47-57)

This shows that God holds us responsible for rejoicing, praising Him, and being thankful for all the
good things He’s given us.

We face a lot of tough circumstances in this life, and the world expects us to behave a certain way
when problems come. But God told us to respond a different way—to not let our hearts be troubled.
We get to choose (Deut. 30:19).

We have the option of following Jesus’ words and acting on the Word of God.

I have personally felt the benefit of rejoicing in the Lord. I have seen it destroy the devil. He cannot
stand it. I really believe that God inhabits the praises of His people (Ps. 22:3).

God is so pleased when we look beyond the natural and see things in the light of faith. That blesses
God.
Praise is not the inevitable byproduct that comes when everything is going right in our lives; it is the
driving force. Praise will get our focus where it needs to be—on God. If we start praising God in the
middle of our problems, our problems will shrink so much that we’ll hardly remember to bring them to
God! We’ll be so busy praising Him and thanking Him for His blessings that our problems will be an
afterthought.
