Metros to run parallel in East Bengaluru

BENGALURU: In a first-of-its-kind design in Bengaluru, two metro lines (viaducts) will run
parallel for about a kilometre between Tin Factory and KR Puram on Old Madras Road.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has opted for this expensive solution
after it was unable to find a suitable location to build a station that could connect the two
lines. The two lines — one connecting Mysuru Road with Whitefield and the other linking
the Silk Board junction with Hebbal — will intersect at KR Puram.

The biggest pain point of this proposed design is the two lines eating into the carriageway
of Old Madras Road, the lifeline of technology workers commuting to software hubs of
Mahadevapura and Whitefield. Metro engineers said this was the most feasible option

While on the one side there is a lake, there is no space on the other side of the road. In
fact, the Tin Factory station has been designed in such a way that there will be only one entrance unlike other designs of Phase II
stations where there are two or more entrances,” a BMRCL official told ET.

KR Puram metro hub

KR Puram will emerge as an important station as three lines will converge there once Phase III network is ready. It will be an
interchange station for people who use Baiyappanahalli-Whitefield (Phase II), Central Silk Board- KR Puram (Phase II-A) and KR
Puram- Hebbal line (Phase III).

While ITD Cementation India has started construction on Reach I extension of Phase II, the BMRCL is arranging finance for the Phase
II-A project. The Phase III project is still in the planning stage.

The width of the Old Madras Road, a busy arterial, will shrink due to the parallel lines.
