Introduction
Introduction
The Philippines is distinct from other Asian nations. It is the only country that is
predominantly Catholic and in which English is one of the two official languages. In
addition, Filipinos have been culturally informed, first, by a colonial mentality and, later,
by the desire to establish a revised “cultural heritage” that allows them to emerge as a
modern nation-state with a unique, independent Filipino identity. In this nationalizing
context, dances of the region have become heritage tools, that is, they function as
instruments that support the ideological construction of a Philippine culture as “rich and
diverse.”
This module will help you understand their significance and cultural value,
including the beauty and complexity of the people living in those places.

How was your question and answer portion in the previous part of this module?
Were you able to answer all of the questions? Did you learn from it?
Now, let us explore more about the Pangalay Dance. Enjoy reading and be sure
you will learn from this.
Background:
Pangalay (also known as Daling-Daling or Mengalai in Sabah) is the traditional
“fingernail” dance of the Tausug people of the Sulu Archipelago and Sabah. This dance
is the most distinctively Asian of all the Southern Philippine dances because dancers
must have dexterity and flexibility of the shoulders, elbows, and wrists- movements that
strongly resemble those of kontaw silat, a martial art common in the Malay Archipelago.
The Pangalay is performed mainly during weddings or other festive event. The male
version of the Pangalay is the Pangasik and features more martial movements, while a
Pangalay that features both a male and female dancer is called Pangiluk.
The original concept of the Pangalay is based on the pre-Islamic Buddhist
concept of male and female celestial angels (Sanskrit: Vidhyadhari, Bahasa Sug:
Biddadari) who are common characters in other Southeast Asian dances.

How was your dance performance? Do you honestly believe that you
performed a lot better this time? Take note that performing does not only
mean dancing gracefully. Proper expressions of the face and body gestures
are also important to show the emotions needed in a particular dance.
How was your experience in the previous activity? I guess you are now ready to
tell what you have learned from that lesson. Let us put into one idea what you have
learned about Pangalay.
1. This time come up with a creative documentary about Pangalay. You may consider
doing a portfolio, a narrative, or a visual presentation of the experiences, insights, and
benefits you gained.
2. Show this to family members and remember to consider the rubrics for checking.
Did you have fun doing the activity? I guess so. One way to attain our goals is
for us to stay focused just like the focus that is needed while learning the
steps in dancing. We need to put our heart and mind into the things we do in
order to gain mastery. Through dancing, we may be able to develop health
