What is a folk song?
A folk song is a type of music attributed to the people of a certain race,
nationality, or location. Its composer is usually unknown.
Filipino folk songs reflect the life that is common to the Filipinos a long
time ago. Some folk songs are work songs related to their kind of lifestyle,
such as fishing, planting, and harvesting. A folk song is affected by its
location or where it originated in terms of its content or message, beat,
melody, and how it is sung. Examples are “Ang Pipit” by Levi Celerio or
“Bahay Kubo” and “Magtanim Ay Di Biro” by Felipe de Leon.
Here are the types of folk songs based on functions.
The types are as follows:
1. Ballad: It is a narrative song or a song that tells a story.
2. Lullaby: It is a song meant to lull the baby to sleep.
3. Friendship: It is a song of warmth, cheerfulness, goodwill, and com-
panionship.
4. Love and courtship. It is a song that expresses one’s feelings toward
the opposite gender. A man normally convinces a woman how much
he cares for and loves her through songs.
5. Rituals or religious worship: It is a song that expresses the individuals’
awe to the gods they worship. It is also used to express their prayers.
